After the success of the CJ and Jeepster lines, Jeep decided to introduce some new models. So, they introduced the SJ Wagoneer and J-series Gladiator in 1962. While they are based on the same platform, the Gladiator Pickup served a much different purpose than the family-hauling Wagoneer. As a result, many of these trucks were put to work and driven to death. This example, being offered in Terrell, Texas as a Barn Finds Auction, has been with the previous owner’s family for the past 30 years. If you’d love to have this Jeep Pickup, be sure to bid below.
The body is showing some scares from life on a farm in East Texas, but the seller believes the truck is structurally sound. The bed is looking to be rusty, but the cab does appear to be solid. Fixing the rust wouldn’t be impossible, but finding a replacement bed might be an easier option. With AMC’s purchase of Kaiser-Jeep in 1970 came some changes and updates to the J-series. The biggest external change was the installation of the Wagoneer grille. Other changes came a year later, but more on that below.
Here’s what makes this truck really worth saving! Under the hood is the running 360 V8, which is paired to a 4-speed and 4-wheel drive. Partway through 1971, Jeep started fitting these trucks with AMC engines rather than the Buick 350 that they had been previously using. AMC’s 360 offered slightly more power than the Buick while standardizing manufacturing for Jeep/AMC. Between the 360, manual transmission and 4×4 system, this truck could make for a great tow rig, snowplow, or serious off-roader. Heck, it would be fun to just drive around town in!
The interior appears to have been updated at some point with seats out of a different vehicle and replacement carpets. The rest of the interior appears to be original. The dash has some killer patina to it and I for one love that it still has a vintage CB radio mounted up. It could use some work but is definitely usable as-is.
There’s definitely work to be done here, but this is the kind of project you can jump in and drive while you fix it up. Rust is likely the biggest concern, but as long as the chassis and cab are solid, it shouldn’t keep you from enjoying it. With the reintroduced of the Gladiator name, it seems likely that interest in the originals will only increase. And with the relatively low survival rates, at least compared to Wagoneers, finding these is becoming more of a challenge. If the bed is too bad, I’d weld up a steel flat bed for it and use it to do “truck stuff”. I’d also take it to the local home center just to terrorize all of the overpriced new trucks with their useless 5 1/2′ beds!

Is it a 71 or a 62? It says 62 in pics and 71 in title. The 80s ford car seats and center console from a conversion van back seat area and the steering wheel from a 80s model oldsmobile are interesting touches . Id like to see the underside more and obviously a tailgate is long gone.

What did this sell for? Bizzare enough ive seen much worse missing most every thing and of course not running missing an engine sell for upwards of 1500 to very confused people
