When this 1964 Chevrolet C10 Stepside shortbed came in as a Barn Finds Auction, we decided we’d better go take a closer look! It’s located in Emmett, Idaho, which is just down the road from Barn Finds HQ. While we were taking a look, we also took photos of it for the auction, which you can view below (full-resolution here). It’s a sweet old truck with some cool history. The seller, Gary, has known the truck since it was delivered new to the Emmett Garage. It was used by the owner of the dealership for a number of years, but eventually was parked under a tree in the second owner’s yard. A few years back, Gary had the chance to buy it, and he just couldn’t miss out on owning it. After buying it, he got it back on the road and cleaned it up. He’s enjoyed it, but the time has come to find a new home for it.

According to Gary, the Emmett Garage (the Chevrolet dealership at the time), received this and one other C10 at the same time. The other truck was sold to a local customer, while this one was used at the dealership. Gary’s brother worked at the Emmett Garage at the time and drove this truck. It eventually became the dealer’s personal truck, and they used it for a number of years. Their family sold it to its second (technically first) owner, who used it for a number of years. When they passed away over a decade ago, their widow parked it, and it didn’t move again until Gary purchased it.

When Gary got the truck, it’s interior was needing some attention. The biggest issue was the seat, so he had an upholstery shop in Garden City, Idaho, restore the seat, and they installed new upholstery in the correct colors and materials, plus installed new carpet. The rest of the interior just needed a good cleaning. The original radio is the only thing that doesn’t currently work: it powers on and lights up, but doesn’t output any audio. The dash looks great, and the steering wheel has amazing patina. Gary wanted to be able to take his wife out in the truck, so he made sure it was clean and comfortable. We would say he accomplished that mission nicely!

While you could get a V8 in these, this one was equipped with the inline-6. This example is the 292 cui version, which was rated at 175 horsepower and 275 foot pounds of torque. These engines are known to be incredibly smooth and durable. While a V8 might sound more exciting, this engine offers similar output. During the seller’s ownership, it has been serviced and recently received a rebuilt carburetor. It leaks a little oil, but overall, is in good order and can be enjoyed as is. As you can see in the video below, it moves and stops as it should. The seller does note that the tires are getting older, but it goes down the road as it should.

This truck’s only weakness is some rust in the front fenders and door bottoms. The cab corners and floors look to be in solid original condition. The seller replaced the wood in the truck bed with custom-cut cherry wood, which looks great. We didn’t find any signs of rust in the frame or bed structure.

The paint has lots of patina, which we would be inclined to leave. Given the rest of the truck’s condition, repairing the rust and treating it to a fresh coat of paint wouldn’t be a bad idea, though, and would certainly make it stand out. The seller has some spare parts for it, which are included. We want to thank him for letting us take a look at this truck in person, it was cool to see something with local history and it was absolute pleasure to meet Gary! I think they came from the factory with rusty front fenders, never saw one with out it. This one had the West Coast Jr. mirrors at one time. A shame they don’t/won’t/can’t build them this simple anymore. Good luck buyer and seller.

They make cab corner repair patches, replace the fenders and repair the doors. I had a similar 1972 C10 with a 327. (Not original) I changed the 4 speed with the granny first with a 4 speed (a Saginaw ) from a,Camaro. It made for a nicer driving truck. Cool truck, there is one here in town that I have been drooling over for quite some time.

“Original stereo” isn’t working? Looks like an AM radio to me; I don’t believe a “stereo” radio was even offered in these in 64….cool old truck!

You are correct Rob, these older trucks came only with AM radios. All in all this truck is a true Survivor. It’s a blast to cruise around town in and see all the folks doing a double take!

For sure. I never knew the 292 was available for the C10. I always thought only the C20 could get it. I had a ’65 and the original seat in it never looked like this one with the color contrast.

What a nice cruiser. Here in the Mid Atlantics that Chevy would get $10K easily.Good Luck with the auction.

My very first vehicle was a 1965 C10 that was almost a twin to this one. Same color body with white cab top, step side and the 292 6 cylinder. About the only differences I see is mine had the big back window and ran on propane (I bought it from the propane company my dad worked for). I paid $350 for it in 1973 (I was 14 at the time) and sold it to a local farmer for $700 a couple of years later.

I believe the owner of the dealer was Erling Johansson. That was one of dad’s dealer contacts in the 70’s. Nicest guy you’d ever want to meet. Offered me a job on his farm. Didn’t have a license or transportation so I couldn’t take it. We lived in Boise.

Actually, Johansson didn’t buy the Emmett Garage until the early 70s, I worked in the Bank down the street and remethmber it well. My bror worked for them also.

I learned to drive in a 69 C 10. It had the inline 6 cylinder, 292. And the 4 speed manual, (with granny) and posi rear end. It had been a forestry truck. (forestry green) It was well maintained and quite stable. We lived out of town and it was a great truck for driving the country roads, as it held the road nicely. And didn’t get stuck in the snow. It was a great vehicle to learn to drive in. It’s stability on the road always provided safety.
