This 1972 Ford Mustang Fastback is an exceptionally tidy classic. However, sensible upgrades have not only unlocked improved performance but also made life aboard this pony car more comfortable. It has no weaknesses, making it ideal for enthusiasts seeking a turnkey classic. The seller believes the time is right for the Ford to find a new home, and with fine weather on our doorstep, it offers the winning bidder the opportunity to indulge in classic motoring pleasure. Therefore, the owner has listed this Mustang exclusively with us at Barn Finds Auctions.

Ford performed its final facelift on the First Generation Mustang in 1971, but made only minor changes for the 1972 model year. This Fastback rolled off the line that year, with the Body Plate confirming that the first owner ordered it in Code 5H Medium Brown. A total refresh included a color change to Grabber Yellow, with the hood blackout and spoilers creating a Mach 1 tribute. Faulting the car’s appearance is seemingly impossible. The paint retains a mirror shine, the panels are as straight as an arrow, and this beauty is rust-free. The crystal clear glass and sparkling trim add to the car’s visual appeal. While the period-correct Magnum 500 wheels and Cooper Cobra tires aren’t original, they suit the Mustang’s character. Opening the trunk reveals the factory wheels, which the buyer could refit for authenticity.

Powering this Mustang is a 351ci V8. It is freshly rebuilt and bolted to a three-speed C6 automatic transmission. Adding to the effortless driving experience are power steering and power front disc brakes. The H-Code 351 delivered 177hp in 1972, but this motor may place significantly more at the driver’s disposal. The rebuild included a new Edelbrock carburetor with an electric choke, headers, a new starter, alternator, a radiator, and a new fuel tank. That’s a comprehensive list, and with the V8 breathing better, this Fastback should be an entertaining driver. The bulletproof nature of the mechanical components means that this iconic pony car should offer the winning bidder years of reliable service. Potential buyers can consider it a turnkey proposition, with no known mechanical needs or shortcomings.

This Mustang’s interior possesses the ‘wow” factor following a comprehensive refresh. The dash and pad are new, as are the seatcovers, carpet, and trunk liner. Cosmetics weren’t the only focus; this interior received a new ignition switch, heater, and washer and wiper motor. The presentation is first-rate and would suit buyers seeking a high-end driver. There is no wear or evidence of physical damage, confirming that this Mustang has been treated respectfully. Air conditioning will keep its occupants cool, and the sports gauge cluster allows the driver to monitor this classic’s mechanical well-being. The console provides additional storage space and versatility, the high-mounted brake light improves safety, and the only functional issue is the inoperative retro-style stereo.

Some enthusiasts focus on originality and are unwilling to accept modifications. However, others place enjoyment at the top of their Wish List and will embrace sensible, carefully considered upgrades if they improve the ownership experience. This 1972 Mustang Fastback isn’t as it left the factory, but it is an exceptionally clean driver-grade classic that the new owner can enjoy immediately. Its engine will deliver performance gains, and its interior is spotless. Add the lack of rust and its exterior appearance to the mix, and it is easy to see why bidding on this classic makes perfect sense.

This looks like a very nice example of the model. I don’t care for these Mustangs however, because in typical Detroit fashion, cars that started off relatively small grew and added bulk as the model years progressed, the Mustang especially so. This modelis way too big to be what a Mustang was supposed to be.
