BF AUCTION: 1974 BMW 2002

Sold For: $500

If you are a fan of German sports cars, you probably already know that BMW 2002s are a hot commodity right now! They are fun little cars to drive, but they are getting harder to find. We are helping Reader Nathan G’s family find new homes for their father’s cars and he happened to own one of these fun BMWs. If you missed his Volvo 122S that we recently featured, you can check it out here. This one is also in need of work, but it runs and moves! You can find it in Breckenridge, Minnesota and you can cast your high bid below.

You might notice that I stated that it moves and not that it drives. Well, that’s because it’s going to need brake work before you can drive it anywhere. Nathan was able to drive it forward and back after getting the engine running though, so at least we know that it has the potential to be a driver without a ton of work. Making it a safe driver will take more work though, as there is some rust to be dealt with.

Under the hood, you’ll find a 100 horsepower inline four-cylinder. It’s paired to a 4-speed manual and while this might not sound like a wild combination, paired with their low weight, it’s plenty of power for brisk drives. It really isn’t until you hit the twisties that the 2002 really comes to life. As previously stated, there’s going to be some work to be done before hitting the street. The engine bay is going to need some detailing, but it looks complete. Other than the air cleaner it also appears to be quite stock, which makes this a good place to start for anything from restoration to an all-out performance build.

As is typical with any ’70s car that has been left out in the elements, this one is going to need interior work. It’s complete, which is a great place to start, with what appears to be dealer-installed AC. While it won’t be cheap to get interior looking great again, their popularity means that you can now get every part to make it like new. Personally, I’d do only what it takes to make it a decent driver. I’d install a dash cover, new seat upholstery, new carpets and try to fix anything else that doesn’t clean up well enough to use.

Nathan has done a great job providing photos of the problem areas on this one. While I see rust, the floors look to be solid. These cars are known to be rust-prone and there are a few companies making patch panels and even entire sections of the body. This one would be a labor of love to make it pristine, but if you are handy, you could make this one into a decent driver without breaking the bank.

These cars really are on the rise in value, even low trim models are fetching considerably more than they were just a few years ago. Nathan has set a very low reserve on this one, so even if you just want it as a parts donor, it would be worth bidding on. Given just how desirably these have become though, I really hope the next owner saves it and does the work needed to get it back on the road! If you have any questions about it, please leave them in the comments.

I’ll take it off your hands if you give me $500! Good luck with that rust.

Photos of the frame rails and rear shock towers. If those are shot, it’s more of a parts car.

If this were a TII it might be worth the price of entry but since it’s not and the rust issue is going to be a pretty big one. The 2002 is a nice car but way to much work for me!

I have 2 of these 2002s among the 11 BMWs in my collection. They are a blast to drive and relatively easy to restore AS LONG AS THEY ARE NOT RUSTY. Rusty front fenders are easy to replace. Everything else…not so much. This car has a Weber carb, probably a 32/36 and a common upgrade, which explains why there is no stock air cleaner. The most valuable item in in the car may be the a/c system. Some of the original parts can be combined with new parts and a new compressor to make an original looking but modern running system. Unfortunately, though, I don’t think this car is a good restoration candidate. It needs literally everything.
