BF Auction: 1991 Chrysler Lebaron Convertible

Sold for $1,850View Result

There was a time when Chrysler K-cars and their derivates were everywhere, but these days you don’t come across nice ones often. This 1991 Lebaron Convertible is a driver that’s just about ready to enjoy. The seller has owned it for the past decade but hasn’t driven it much since 2018, so they’ve decided it’s time to let someone else enjoy this drop-top. If you’ve been on the hunt for a comfortable cruiser that’s classified as a classic (over 25 years old!) but offers the convinces of a more modern car, this could be the one for you. It’s located in Brookings, South Dakota with 88k miles on the odometer, and is being offered as a Barn Finds Auction!

The seller did all the needed service to make it a good driver between 2015 and 2018. The 3.0 liter V6 was treated to a full tuneup which included replacing timing components and the valve cover gaskets. While the 4-cylinder turbos are very popular with enthusiasts for their tune-ability, the Mitusbishi-sourced V6 is a smooth-running engine that offers similar levels of power without the issues associated with a turbocharged engine. They recently put seafoam in the cylinder, installed a new battery and it started right back up without any issues. It just recently completed a 300-mile trip without any issues and is said to run very nicely.

If you want comfort, this interior looks to offer plenty of it. It isn’t luxurious, but those over-stuffed seats look like a great place to settle into for top-down cruises. The interior could definitely use thorough detailing to make it look its best again, but overall it appears to be in good usable condition. Being a convertible, it’s actually surprising to see one in this good of shape. Plastics from this era aren’t known for their durability when exposed to sun and heat, but this car’s hard surfaces are in good condition and the soft surfaces don’t show any serious signs of sun damage. The only major area that needs attention is the convertible top, which needs to be replaced sooner, rather than later. New tops are available and range in price from $200 up to $500 depending on the material and rear window you pick.

Prior to putting it back on the road again, the seller also serviced the brakes and installed new shocks/struts. Mechanically, this car is well-sorted and can be driven home as is. The only remaining issues that could be sorted at this point are purely cosmetic. Chryslers from this era are known to have paint issues and this one is no exception, but it isn’t as severe as is often seen on Lebarons this age. The worst area is the hood, which shows a few spots of paint release, but there are also a few small spots on the driver’s side fender and door. A full respray would fix the issue, but we would probably try getting color-match paint and just repair those spots. The rest of the paint is still glossy and while touching it up won’t keep it from releasing more in the future, it will keep the car on the road and looking good for years to come.

These cars are surprisingly nice to drive, especially so in convertible form. This one looks to be in good shape overall and having all the major service already completed is a huge bonus. So, if you are ready to hit the road in this Lebaron, be sure to bid below. And if you have any questions for the seller, please leave them in the comments section.

This variant of K Car is much improved and fun to drive. This one looks like it could use a good detailing. It’s too far away for me, and I really dislike White cars, but someone should get serious about this one. You’ll
    enjoy it.

People complain and moan about the high cost of getting into the old car hobby, but these are the great exception. Inexpensive to buy, neat-looking, parts are available as well as mechanics who know how to fix them, and, the top goes down.

I checked the bidder registration and the seller isn’t registered to bid. I will do more investigating just to be 100% sure. We make everyone register with their credit card in part to ensure there’s no funny business, so it pretty easy for us to verify bidders’ identities. I believe Squeeky was just bidding.

The seller sent us additional photos of the car, which have been added to the photo gallery.

Weren’t 3.0 Mitsubishi engines known for blown head gaskets?

My sister had a Plymouth Voyager with that engine and if I recall correctly she had to replace the head gaskets at least once.
