Offered for around 2.5 decades here in the U.S. and Canada, GM’s Chevrolet Cavalier was available in a wide variety of body styles and trim levels, with hardtops and without, and with both four doors and two doors. Other GM makes offered similar cars under their own names, so the list of models is extensive. This 1992 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 Convertible is located in Manchester, New York, and is listed here as a Barn Finds Auction!

The second-generation Cavalier was made from 1987 for the 1988 model year until the end of 1994. Taking a cue from the uber-popular Ford Taurus, GM redesigned the front end in 1991 as part of an extensive facelift to remove the grille and draw air in through the bottom of the bumper. The seller has provided photos of the car with its white convertible top both up and down, so you can imagine yourself cruising in it.

This car appears in perfect condition in many of the photos, but there is a dent and some rust on the driver’s side quarter panel. Being in New York, some underside photos would be welcome, but maybe the seller can provide those to any serious buyers. RS and Z24 models received color-keyed bumpers. 1992 cars now had standard anti-lock brakes.

This is one of two overall interior photos; neither of them shows the front seats. We hope they’re in good condition, but the rest of the interior looks basically like new in the photos. They mention this car has a “white leather custom interior.” The Cavalier had standard power door locks, which were added as standard equipment in 1992, and automatically locked when the automatic transmission (which this car has) was moved out of the Park position.

The engine is the standard 3.1-liter OHV V6 with 140 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque when new. Backed by the three-speed automatic sending power to the front wheels, they say it runs great and has new plugs, plug wires, solenoid, fuel filter, and much more.

The seller states that this car is “nearly flawless”, but admits there’s one major flaw to deal with. They’ve provided several photos of the quarter panel so that you can inspect it closer. If you’re handy with bodywork and have been looking for a small convertible, check this one out here on Barn Finds Auctions!

That quarter panel. Ughh. In my experience these cars rusted easily so I would be concerned about what else is going on there. I had two, a type 10 and an LS I think? Both of mine had manual transmissions and this one would be really interesting with a stick. I had no idea these could be ordered with leather. Good luck with the sale.

Thank you!! Yes the quarter panel has some rust and has been repaired, but not properly.
There is no sign of Bondo just a rust scrape job and a paint over. The rust spot has not spread. If I had more time, I would repair it. But it’s a great car for the right buyer. I had a 1987 that rusted in the same spot as well. The rocker panels and frame have no signs of rust at all, I assume the previous owner before me got in a small fender bender and never took the time to repair the paint properly as that is the only part of the car showing any signs of rust. There was a clean Carfax so hard to tell when the small accident could’ve happened.

How much for the two cars parked next to it; the Challenger & the Charger Rallye?

Sorry they aren’t mine. I have a mustang and a couple Buicks not for sale.

My wife and I rented one of these on the Island of Maui in Hawaii in 1993. Same year, same make, same model, except the one we rented was blue. Talk about an unreliable piece of junk. After it broke down for the third time on the second day of our vacation, I was forced to accept having to drive a 4 door Ford Tempo to ride around in.

    Hi Erin,

To your knowledge does the car have rust in any other place in addition to the quarter panel? Does the transmission shift well? Any engine issue that needs to be fixed? How long can you store the car until I can pick it up?
I am from out of state.
    Thank you!

There are no other rust spots on the car, including on the door panels, the rocker panels, and underneath the car. Rust only appears on the one quarter panel that looks to have appeared due to a small dent that wasn’t repaired before I owned the car. We can store the car through the winter, as we keep it inside in a heated space. We just replaced the selenoid, we’ve had no issues with the transmission. Just had a tuneup with new plugs and wires, new brakes, new fuel filter all in April when we put it on the road for the season. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Hi Erin,

Is there an opportunity to see the car and test drive it before buying the car? Let me know to make the arrangements.

    Thank you,
