“We just don’t drive it very often.” Have ever more true or more sad words been rendered? But most people with a collector car say them at one point. Some, like the owner of this 1972 Buick GS 350, decide to sell. I’m guessing that many regret it. So if you need a new muscle car to fill that hole in your garage, this car is available here on eBay for past $25K with bidding set to wrap up on Wednesday. You’ll retrieve it from Montello, Wisconsin.
The Buick Grand Sport came out in 1965 based on the Skylark body. It took its place in the hierarchy of GM intermediates which included the Chevrolet Chevelle, Olds Cutlass, and Pontiac Tempest/LeMans. For 1972, the Buick was available in mighty GS 455 guise. This car is a more tame version, and it has the original, serialized 350-CID, 230-hp power plant, just enough engine to get you in trouble without being impossible to use. This one was rebuilt in 2011, though it’s not clear whether there’s paperwork, or if the work was done while in the hands of the current owner, who has had it about a decade.
This is what appears to me to be an “honest” car. The odo shows just shy of 99,000 miles, and the seller says it was restored in 1990—which might not make for a Pebble Beach winner all this time later but which shows for what it is. If anything of that resto is unraveling, you’ll see it and can factor that into your value equation. As it is, not much looks out of place. The foam insulators on the air intakes under the hood appear in need of replacing, and were those valve covers painted bright orange while on the car, or is that overspray just a reflection? The under-hood area in general could use a good toothbrush detailing. I might also worry that the trunk floor has been rusty and restored in an amateurish-looking way, and that there are no photos of the floors of this Upper Midwest car. Hopefully if they were replaced, the work was done right, given the loss of structure found in a convertible body. The black exterior finish might have some flaws, though for its age, the color looks good.
Is there anything else to note? The seat upholstery is a rather grandmotherly shade of beige, but perhaps good for cruising in a non-AC car (I realize it’s a convertible, but hot is hot.) And if you do cruise it, look at the beauty of the instrument panel. Who wouldn’t want to sit there and revel in the design appointments (though you do wonder if the clock is right more than twice a day). Oh, and it does seem a bit odd that there’s no photo with the top down. With style, decent power, the chance to drop the top—this GS 350 will never not be desirable. Experts can debate its level of correctness. I’d just get in it and go somewhere.

My guess is those beige seats will
produce many more smiles per
Miles than my all black vinyl interior did on my 71 Skylark conv. Fun car, but it ran hot, had no AC and the aforementioned black interior acted like an oven in bright sun and temps above 80 degrees. I made the very same amateurish trunk repair using some bondo and trunk splatter paint, thanks for the laugh!
We “just didn’t use the car enough” and I am one who sold mine. I miss it occasionally and have yet to replace it. I did find that an unused classic car can be a lot of baggage when all you have for storage is a single car garage. Add in a growing family and the pressure mounts. Oh well, gone are the days. This black 72 sure looks sharp to me.
sharp and nice lines..best style cut out from the rest…beats the Olds 442 and Monte Carlo …might be up with the Judge GTO….right ON
Gary, are you the 2nd owner..? Love to take her off your hands…The GS would be exceptionally taking care for…..I have my Mums 2002 Honda Civic..I have spent many thousands of money into restoring her since 2020… I get mega compliments and lookers just driving..the floor boards..and I really hate to say…lotta floor rot…yuuuup…your Buick GS is friggin Gorgeous..thks Dane U.
Thats NOT bondo on the trunk floor nob. They use seam sealer on the plugs genius!
Needs a proper power steering cap.
Nice cruising car.
I see 2 different steering wheels in the pics – the one above, & this one …

Sad story in the early 80’s a buddy and I used to fix up cars or the side a friend gave us his high school ride a green 71 gs 350 4 speed convertible with white top and white bench seats to work on it had sat for 6-7 years and the trunk and floors were see through. But while we had it the friend was killed by a drunk driver on his way home from work
His fiancé could not bear to see the GS they had dated in and asked us to get rid of it we parted out the car
Nice looking car in the right colors imo.
SOLD for $27,012.
