Can You Find A Better: 1972 Mustang Mach 1 CJ

1972 Mustang Mach 1 351CJ

This Mach 1 has a great look to it and is packing a Cobra Jet engine, sadly it isn’t the might 429 CJ, but is instead a 351 CJ. By ’72, compression numbers were on there way down meaning these “high” performance 351s were putting out just 266 horsepower. It might not be the kind of power one would expect from a Cobra Jet, but it’s not terrible. This car is already bid up to $7,000 and with less than 24 hours left, has probably reached its top dollar. You can take a closer look at it here on eBay in New Lebanon, Ohio. So can you find a Mach 1 for a better price? Finding a CJ equipped car could be tough, but good luck! Special thanks to Chris S. in Pennsylvania for this tip!

Could look this nice. Just be sure to keep the total investment below $34000!

That is 266 NET horsepower (with all accessories installed and operating). If you convert it to pre 72 GROSS horsepower it is a little over 330 gross. That is no slouch.

True, the rating methodology did change at that time. There were some definite power-robbing factors for the ’72-up Cobra Jets though, a switch from closed chamber to open chamber heads, and there was Ford’s early heavy-handed emissions kludge in the form of factory-supplied retarded cam timing events.

Ford’s retarded cam timing (as ground into cam or crank sprocket or both, depending on the application) was nearly as big a power robber as the switch from high-cr closed to low-cr open chamber heads. Fortunately a proper aftermarket cam and timing set will remedy this situation, but it is well worth noting for Cleveland newbies, a bad idea if the original Ford 2-piece valves are still in use.

Q codes are nice but the real rarity for 72 was the R code 351 H.O.

Would much prefer this as equipped w/ the 351 CJ (or HO) than the boat anchor 429

The “Clydesdale” mustangs just look awesome. I prefer them over any other generation of ‘stangs.
This one here has a lot of potential as well:
