Canadian Carport: 1969 Camaro RS/SS

Often when we find a classic car hidden under a tarp or cover we assume the worst, as these coverings typically hold moisture around the car, causing serious rust. However, occasionally a car has been protected so well that rust isn’t a significant issue. This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS has been in an enclosed car port since 1996 and when we saw it under this car cover, we figured the tin worm had probably destroyed it. Upon closer inspection, we discovered that it is actually solid. It’s currently in Langley, British Columbia, Canada and can also be found here on eBay.

The original L48 350 cui V8 is still under the hood, but has had the original heads rebuilt already. The seller claims the bottom half has never been rebuilt, but that the engine runs great and doesn’t smoke. The SS350 wasn’t the biggest or most powerful engine option available in the Camaro, but it was rated at a respectable 300 hp and 380 pounds of torque.

As you can see, this Camaro isn’t rust free, but it appears that the frame and floors are solid and cancer free. We are a bit concerned by the rust on the drivetrain and suspension, but hopefully it is only surface rust. Replacement parts are plentiful and easy to find, but can get expensive for major components.

The interior looks exceptional and could be enjoyed as is, which is surprising given the car’s mileage. The car had a respray done to it back in 1981, so we are going to assume that the interior was restored at the same time. Like the majority of the Camaros built in ’69, this one came with the three speed Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 transmission. It also came with the 12 bolt rear end, which could allow for putting some serious power down to the pavement.

It isn’t perfect, but it should make for a great starting point for a restoration or could be driven as is. Getting it into the States will likely be the biggest problem, but it shouldn’t be all that difficult since it is an older car. Even though this car looks solid in photos, we would still recommend giving it a closer look in person. If anyone is in the Langley area, go give it a look. What would you do with this Camaro if it were yours?

“This Car Had Been Sitting In An Enclosed Carport Since 1996 Until Recently”

“THIS IS A NICE RUNNING DRIVING CAR TURN THE KEY AND GO”

Hate to rain on the parade (well, it is in British Columbia, so what else could be expected?), but the very rusty brakes in the listing picture seem to be consistent with the top statement, but not with the “Turn the key and go” claim.

If the reserve is reasonable it could be a good way to get into an RS/SS, but it looks like a flip, so I wouldn’t hold my breath for a bargain reserve. And if you win the auction I’m guessing you’ll need more than just the key to get it home.

Erik, we said the 350 wasn’t the most powerful engine option available.

Resto for sure… Build the L48, Hydra, brakes etc. then work up the body back to original color.

It’s all there so I would keep it stock, leave the resto mods for cars missing engines or other main parts.

Good one Fred! I learned the hard way, way back in HS (70’s). I had a 70′ Torino 429CJ, put the old N50’s on the rear, air shocks etc. lol nobody could ride in the backseat (rubbing) but it was HS and it was cool, actually they did not stick out that much (1/2in.?) traction bars did help with wheel spin lol.

A little air in the tires to see how it really sits would help. Going from bottom to top there is a lot of work to be done on this one. But at least what looks like a solid body makes it worth the effort. The body color leaves me cold as does the interior. Where I live, which is cool, damp and humid a lot of the time, I’ve seen cars this old pulled out of garages that have sat on blocks over plastic sheets on the concrete with just a light cotton dust cover and they come out looking like this and it really is just surface rust that cleans up with a lot of elbow grease. For sure I’d be pitching the brake discs and rebuilding the entire brake system as a start. I’m thinking a really nice driver out of this.

@ Your Name…there is no RS interior, other than the designation on the steering wheel. Camaros had 2 interior choices, standard, and custom, and either could be ordered independent of the exterior trim (RS) or performance (SS) option choices.
