Cheap Cossie: 1975 Chevrolet Cosworth Vega

Cosworth Vegas were not cheap when they were new at about $5,900 in 1975. However, this 1975 Cosworth Vega is cheap and comes with an extra 1976 Vega, with no engine, as a bonus. This Cosworth is said to be complete and run but it is definitely a project that will need work. It is listed here on Facebook Marketplace for $2,850 and we appreciate reader Cameron for bringing this to our attention. Both cars are located in Shelley, Idaho.

In 1975, the Cosworth Vega was reported to reach a top speed of 121 mph and a 0-60 time of 10.3 seconds. The Cosworth motor was a 2.0-liter engine that produced approximately 110 horsepower and 107 ft-lbs of torque. Peak horsepower was reached at 5,600 RPMs and all cars came with a 4-speed stick and 3.73 rear end ratio. It is clear from the condition of the engine compartment that this car will need more than cosmetic work on the body and interior.

All Cosworth Vegas were given a serial number. This car is numbered 2,037 which would indicate that it was produced at the end of the production run since only 2,061 units were sold in 1975. And all Cosworth Vegas were painted in black in 1975 and Chevrolet expanded the paint pallet to 8 different colors in 1976. Sales never reached Chevrolet’s forecast of 5,000 models per year.

So you get a pretty solid parts car and an authentic Cosworth Vega. It is a unique car that draws attention and it was a heroic attempt by GM to bring something interesting to the market in the mid-1970s. Do you have the skills and pocketbook to bring this car back to like?

The Cosworth mtr should have been put into a Chevette. With body mods like the 2600HSR they got in England and Germany.

Yeah that Vauxhall was a very cool car with plaid interior. Europe always seem to get the great cars.

      Agreed x10.
I Love the look of the 76-78 Chevetts, and wish they had a better engine choice from the factory. I like the 2.8 v6 upgrades, seems like a no brainier, but wish there was an option one step below that with awesome gas mileage too. The cosworth would have fit the bill. And I would suspect if there was that choice or something similar, it would have been in production longer.

The 76 is a GT model. Interior and some body parts are compatible, but not the front or rear portions of the vehicle with the Cosworth. The Cosworth has the 74-75 body, which I greatly prefer.

A mid-’70s performance car is an oxymoron, and a Vega is still a Vega, regardless of the Cosworth lipstick. That said, as a nostalgia piece, it’s not a bad price for two cars.

I’m with Veganman Dan. If I I had the room I would buy them and do something; I don’t know what until I get close to them. Vegas are generally insulted by everybody, and with good reason, but the Cosworth idea was interesting but having two restored Vegas is bizarre……….

This does not sound like a bad deal at all if all the correct paperwork is there and in order. I love the idea of having a Cosworth but in truth I would try to sell it for close to the asking price and focus on the other Vega. Get it looking good inside and out. Maybe a 10 bolt rearend with decent disc breaks. Make sure the suspension was rebuilt with good quality upgrades. 4.3 Chevy V6. Probably a 5spd.Chassis stiffeners and enjoy it immensely!
