Cop Rod: 1951 Ford Sheriff’s Car

1951 Ford Sheriff's Car

This Ford is an interesting mixture, it’s part cop car part hot rod. It started life as a fully equipped and ready to serve sheriff’s patrol car. It was used until the late ’50s, when it’s dated and tired engine just couldn’t keep up with all the modern V8 powered speed machines. From there it’s story is lost, but fast forward a few decades and someone decided to turn it into a bit of a hot rod. They took the tired engine out and put a 351 V8 under the hood! It now has plenty of power to keep up with modern traffic and any would-be perpetrators. You can find this Cop Rod here on eBay in Fenton, Michigan with a bid of $4k and a BIN of $11k.

1951 Ford Interior

While I love the looks of this Ford, it clearly isn’t wearing it’s original paint, but at least this is a nice color combo for a sheriff’s car. I would love to see some documentation proving the car’s service history.

1951 Ford Engine

As you can see, the 351 does fit nicely in this engine bay! It isn’t the same as having the original engine in it, but for the sake of driveability and fun, I could live with it. I bet it sounds great and surprises anyone daring enough to race it at stop lights.

1951 Ford Patrol Car

Whether this car really is an original sheriff’s car or not, it’s definitely cool! What a great idea to the car that use to chase after hot rods into one. What do you think, would you like to take this Ford out for a spin?

I’m not very fussy about swapping out the flattie but at least it stayed in the family. You can make those flatheads go pretty well and not compromise the reliability but then, you can drop this one right in and just drive it. Nice car!

Nice old car. At least the siren is accurate: a Federal WL. I also like the old GE control head that suggests that it had a low band radio at one time. I noticed an antenna mount on the trunk but no visible antenna unless it’s just the way the photo was shot. I’d love to take it for a spin. Back in the early ’80s a buddy of mine owned me some money that he couldn’t afford to repay. Someone had given him a ’54 Ford business coupe. Rough around the edges but it ran nicely. I used it for a work car for a short time until my friend came up with what he owed and “redeemed” the old car.
