Crusty and Rusty: 1958 MGA Roadster Barn Find

1958 MGA Roadster

According to the seller, this 1958 MGA has been in a barn for 39 years! Now available here on eBay where the no-reserve auction currently at less than $700, this straight but neglected car might just be the little British roadster you’ve been looking for. The engine is frozen, but it looks all there (and if it’s not, parts are easy to come by). The seller states that the car is 95% complete. They don’t spell out what the missing 5% is, but apart from side curtains (which may be in the trunk) and the octagonal surround for the trunk badge, I couldn’t find anything obvious missing. There’s an odd pattern of surface corrosion on the body and the underside is covered in crusty surface rust, but with the exception of the sills, it looks relatively structurally solid. I always end up doing a double-take when I look under an MGA and see wooden floorboards, but that’s correct for this model. The odometer is showing 45k miles, but who knows if that’s 45 or 145. Are you the one to bring this one back to life after being dormant since America’s Bicentennial?

This seems remarkably intact considering it has sat for four decades in Florida humidity. However all that “crusty surface rust” will be a formidable challenge to any restorer. I suspect virtually every fastener will have to be cut off and replaced and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. I credit the seller with having the sense to clean it up and take some representative photos so potential buyers will have a good idea of what they are bidding on.

Maybe an OK project for someone wanting to get into a vintage MG cheap, if the bidding doesn’t go much higher, but there are a lot of these available just about all the time that would make a better deal that you could be driving sooner for less work and money.

Nice car and like the colour. Great photos will always sell a car. Always wonder why some sellers do them so badly……..

Still kicking my self in the butt for not buying the “one that got away” back in the early 80’s . It was fire engine red with a Corvette engine stuffed in it ,ran and drove but had no top or top frame. It was in Titusville Florida where I grew up at a small used car lot and they wanted around 3 grand for it… If I knew then what I know now I’d have bought it and still have it to this day……
