Diesel Duty: 1990 Mazda B2200 SE-5

1990 is fairly new for vehicles here at Barn Finds but when something interesting, useful, and fairly cheap comes up it’s hard to resist. This 1990 Mazda B2200 SE-5 Diesel pickup can be found on Craigslist, or here on the CL archive, with an asking price of $2,000. It’s located in beautiful Spokane, Washington. This one-eyed fourth-generation Mazda truck looks good but the seller says that it’s “90% complete”, I’m not quite sure what that means.

There aren’t many photos but the seller has touched on all of the golden areas: each side – including front the rear views, an interior photo from the driver’s perspective, and an engine photo! I know, that right there is worth two-grand to me. Not to mention that I’m a huge fan of these small pickups. Mazda made good trucks which sounds weird to say today since we don’t get a Mazda truck in the US and haven’t gotten one since production ended for the Mazda B-Series (Ford Ranger). Coincidentally, the Ranger was a response to the Ford Courier which was a rebadged Mazda. This B2200 pickup looks great to me from these two exterior photos, only showing a missing headlight. I don’t really see any other exterior flaws at all, do you?

The interior shows a preferred manual transmission and it also shows a pickup that’s being used as a partial storage unit. That’s always a bummer to see vehicles with this much stuff inside, it makes me wonder about the maintenance overall if it’s being used like this. At least the driver’s seat doesn’t appear to be torn and I don’t see too much wrong in there, but it’s hard to tell. The SE-5 model was a level above the base model and it was meant to be “sporty”, at least in appearance. The exterior graphics are the biggest visible cue but they also added side-mount mirrors, white wheels and white-letter tires (if anyone knows where to get a set of white-letter tires for a small pickup).. a rear step bumper, and a tach.

Here’s where the pulling power comes from, Mazda’s R2, 2.2L inline-four diesel which would have had around 70 hp and 105 lb-ft of torque. There is no mention of how or even if the engine runs but I’m assuming that it does. NADA is at $3,750 for an average value of a 1990 Mazda B-Series pickup but that’s not for a diesel. Regardless, $2,000 seems quite reasonable for this truck, if it runs, that is.

Just a reminder that 1990 was 28 years ago, Scotty..! ;-)

These were solid li’l workhorses, and, of course, the diesel could be swapped out for a V8 or perhaps a Mazda V6.

Ha, that’s a good point, B-B, but for some reason it seems “new” to me.

I say that about vehicles from the 1970s. LOL

Good trucks, I’d like a truck like this, but no diesel. May as well buy a case of starting fluid, you’re gonna need it.(I’m sure there’s a can or 2 under the seat) I’ve dealt with diesels for 40 years,( in the cold) so I know what I’m talking about.

i think if you cleaned out the trash, and spent 5 bucks on a headlight it would sell faster.

I had one of these with a cab and a half and 4 x 4. One of the best vehicles I’ve owned.

I have recently realized that these little diesel trucks and cars,i.e. rabbits, chevettes and so one bring good money. For good reason. I,m in Spokane and am about to try to contact the seller. I love the p/u the most and in my price range. I will post if i get it-most likely gone though.

I don’t remember these being offered new with the diesel.

It doesn’t say anywhere on the outside of the truck that it had the diesel and it is weird to see the SE-5 package with this engine.

The ad says it is a European engine, so maybe somebody installed it over the sometime over the truck’s life.

These trucks were give aways at the Mazda dealership. Again I don’t remember these even being offered with this engine.

I am agreeing with Miguel, I don’t think that the diesel was offered in those trucks. My Dad had a 1985 B2200 Mazda diesel. We used it as a paper route vehicle, it worked great for that, as the gutless little turd would get around 38 mpg, no matter how you drove it.

I spotted the duct tape on the seat. I’ll bet there is a pack of gum and a roll of bailing wire somewhere in that mess.
