In 1973, Ferrari made a big splash in the automotive world when it released the 308 GT4, but it did so with considerable controversy. Many criticized the angular Bertone designed body and the mid mounted V8. However, the mid-engine V8 design proved very effective and became so popular that it’s still one of Ferrari’s most popular engine layouts. The 308 GT4 is considered to be one of the most affordable Ferraris and this project 308 can be found at ForzaMotorSports.com for $13,500.

This car’s body is pretty rough, but replacement body panels for the rusty parts of the car are included in the sale. The engine has already been rebuilt and the rear suspension has been powder coated. The seller doesn’t mention the condition of the transmission, but we would assume if someone went to the expense of rebuilding the engine they would have done the same with the transmission. The Ferrari 3.0L V8 produced 230 hp in American guise, which is quite respectable for a car built in the mid ’70s.

The styling of the 308 is not nearly as curvaceous as most Ferraris, but it’s definitely unique. The design is obviously ’70s Bertone styling and is very reminiscent of the Lancia Stratos. It’s actually quite impressive that Bertone was able to fit a back seat in front of the mid mounted 3.0 liter V8 and the front seats. Granted there isn’t much room in the back seat for a full sized adult, more less two. There is however plenty room for two children, which is how we would justify this car to the wife.

The angular shape of the 308 has kind of grown on us. If the car’s mechanicals are sorted and working properly, this car might actually be a good deal, for a Ferrari that is. The body work will take considerable time and energy, but for the Do-it-Yourselfers out there, this could be a fun project. But remember it’s a Ferrari, so expect parts and repairs to be more expensive.
