Dream Survivor: 1962 Chevy Impala

1962 Impala 283

While this Impala may or may not be the find your dreaming of, the kind of condition it was in when discovered is! Finding a cheap project in a barn is fun, but finding a rust free survivor waiting to be freed from a barn is incredible. This Impala isn’t perfect and sadly has a couple of small rust spots, but is overall in great shape. It appears to be an older restoration, so you’ll want to inspect it closely. The upside, the seller didn’t have to do much to make it a dependable driver! After making a 250 mile trip in it without any issues, they have decided to part ways with it. You can find it here on eBay in Allen, Texas with a current bid of $10k.

Like I said, this car isn’t perfect and clearly was restored at some point in it’s life. Thankfully, it looks to have been well done, meaning the next owner can hop right in and start enjoying it! All it will need is a little bit of POR on the rust spots, some new tires and to refill the A/C system.

That’s right, this Impala has A/C and the seller claims it works, but is low on refrigerant. I’m not sure it will be as simple as a quick recharge to get nice cold air, but you never know. I’d want to check the system out before spending any money on a recharge. If it turns out to not have any leaks and the compressor does work, I’d find some cans of R12 and try charging it back up. Of course, with old A/C systems, it will likely need to be gone through to get cold enough air to be worth the headache.

Yes, there are more desirable finds out there and there are plenty of survivor Impalas, but if you aren’t interested in taking on a full restoration you might want to give this car a closer look. Restoring a car can be a fun project, but it’s also takes a lot of work and time. Sometimes it’s nice to buy a simple project like this that you can drive while fixing the small problems. So would you rather spend the only on this driver or buy a cheaper project that needs a complete restoration?

“Find some cans of r12 and charge it up”. R12 is scarce as all get-out. Around here a 1lb can goes for more than $100.00!

Nice car, just fix what needs fixing and drive it!
BTW, real R-12 (not the Mexican butane version) can still be found for around $15 a can.

Looks like an honest seller with a nice driver to sell. I wouldn’t have driven 250 miles on nearly 30 year old tires, but that’s just me. If the compressor runs and the air is the least bit cool, it’s probably an easy fix.

My gramps had one but it was white with red int. His was manual three on the tree. He traded it for a 76 Monte Carlo new.

Factory air would have to be a rare item on a ’62 Chevrolet. I’d like to know the true number that the General produced. Nice car.
I had a black ’63 Impala with red interior. Like most of the cars I owned back then… I destroyed it.

I bought the same car from my neighbor when I was in high school in 1974. It had dealer add on air, 327 with a powerglide. Leaky windows and rusted through quarters. Light green on green. I paid $100 for it and I loved that car!

This one would be perfect without resto, just fix whatever it takes to make a safe daily driver. Too bad it’s painted the worst color ever.

      WORSE COLOR EVER?!
      Are you high?!
Nuthin’! I mean NUTHIN’! looks as classy as a fine, straight-panels BLACK car!

      The trick is…..NO DINGS…WHATSOEVER!

Nope, not high nor drunk. Everyone who drives a dark colored vehicle knows they’re the most difficult to keep clean. White vehicles still appear clean with a light layer of dust. I’ve lived on a livestock farm on a gravel road for most of my life, currently own 4 pickups and have virtually given up on keeping them clean. A small price to pay for the best place to live. City living, like black vehicles, suck.

This car’s saving grace is the red trim pieces and offsets the worst color ever invented. ha ha I’d proudly drive it and keep it original. Non stock paint jobs are on par with living in town and fugly black paint.

Black isn’t the worst colour. I’d drive it happily. My druthers are white paint over red leather.

If it has no leaks, where did the freon go in the first place?
