Reader Terry W has owned this ’51 GMC pickup for a number of years and has spent much of its life in South Dakota. When moving to Minnesota, Terry left the truck in a garage in South Dakota. Unfortunately, someone broke into the garage and vandalized the truck. Thankfully, they didn’t break out any of the all-important curved glass. It’s since been moved to Minnesota and is currently waiting for a new owner to revive it! What Makes It Special? Had it in South Dakota and then drove and parked it 30 years ago in a garage there. Vandals broke into the garage and broke front and drive side flat glass. Thankfully they didn’t damage the curved glass and it is still all good. I moved it to Breadsley, Minnesota where I’m at now.
Body Condition: The bed floor is gone. And there is a dent in the back fender.
Mechanical Condition: All worked when I parked it, but I did not do anything to it over the last 30 years.
Even a few years ago, this truck would have likely just been a parts donor, but interest in Advance Design trucks has really taken off. Terry’s truck looks to be solid and complete enough that a restoration might be justifiable. The interior is likely going to be the most expensive and time-consuming area to restore, but you can get every nut and bolt to fix it back up.
I’ve always been a fan of these 5 window trucks. While the Cameo truck is more desirable, I’d be perfectly content to have one like this. It will be easy to work on, functional and fairly affordable to own. And if you want to get creative, there are lots of upgrade options that can make them into serious street machines. Colorado in the early seventies was lousy with 5 windows…had a few……great trucks and this is a cheaper way to get into one albeit you’ll have to tear it apart and start almost from scratch
I don’t get the whole five-window cab obsession. I keep hearing how uncommon they are, and yet they’re seemingly everywhere.
I’d take a nice three-window cab anytime. In fact, I actually prefer them.
I have a real soft spot for 5 window GMC pick ups. But, this one give me cause to pause. It needs some serious help. And I am just not the one to provide it. Sorry…pass.
