Fresh Fruits And Vegetables: 1940 Chevy Pick Up

00O0O_PuDmBduftI_600x450

This incredible survivor presses every car guy button I have – it’s old, it’s driveable, it looks great, it has a great story with documented history, an owner who gets it, and best of all, a reasonable asking price. On top of all that, the ad is (was) well written, evocative and the owner took some very good pictures. This is a very unusual 3/4 ton beast, not often seen even when fairly new. This beautiful survivor came from a Massachusetts farm, was purchased by the current owner at auction after the farmer’s death, and carefully updated and restored without destroying its originality. Since this truck was well used, there are likely some non-original features included. The current owner redid the brakes, added a period wiring harness and turn signals.

1940 Chevy Truck

My favorite line from the Craigslist ad: “If you want a truck to restore – find another one – I will not sell it to anyone with plans other than to keep original…” I owned a 1939 3/4 ton Dodge pick up around 1971-72. It was a lot of fun and probably a lot like this Chevy, but just remember, it drives, well, like a truck. Plan to get some exercise for your arms and shoulders when you muscle this truck into a parking lot to show off the new addition to your stable – unless I get there first.

I love seeing the original owner’s name on the doors. The owner was asking $12,000 – I wish I had the garage space for it, I would have gone there to buy it. It was listed here on craigslist in New Haven, Connecticut and has already been deleted so probably was sold. I do hope this went to someone who will love it and show it to as many people as possible, as the owner said in the ad, it’s a great piece of Americana. I wish that new owner could have been me. This seems like one of the best old trucks I have seen in a long time for originality and just pure American truck-ness.

I remember long hard days loading a truck like this one. Good memories every one. I am now almost 70.

A wet-dream example of the way every one of us would love to find a perfect, old, original, unrestored car!

Once it’s sold, it’s sold. The new owner can paint it pink if he/she wants to. The only way to guaranty the truck stays the way he wants it, is for him to keep it.
    It’s a very nice truck.

I love the old style of lettering on the doors. It’s much more distinctive and classy than anything you see today.

For someone that wants you to leave his baby as is the least he could have done was wash it or is the dirty running boards part of the request. Very nice truck if it were mine I’d leave it as is and use it sparingly, oh and wash it.

This is a truck to be preserved. Looks like a real good driver. Too bad the listing has been taken down.

Nice looking old truck, I Love the lines on trucks of this era. I also hope whoever bought it that they leave it alone except for routine repairs. Seeing truck of this era in as close to original that they can be in is nice.
