Iconic Off Roader: 1993 Mercedes G Pickup

1993 Mercedes G Pickup

The Mercedes G series has a long legacy of being a capable off-roader, and this 1993 Mercedes-Benz G Class diesel pickup is no exception. While new G wagons are going for $100,000 or more these days, this one can be bought now for $62,000. It is located in Cedar City, Utah, has a clear title and 24,164 miles on the odometer. If you are a serious off-roader or just appreciate utilitarian machines, you will certainly want to take a closer look at it here on eBay.

According to the listing, the truck has a five-cylinder 250GD diesel engine connected to a four-speed manual transmission. The engine has some slight modifications, including a turbo and bigger mechanical pump. It provides a significant power increase from the stock set up, according to the seller. As expected, it has locking differentials on both axles, operated mechanically from the cab. It also has low gearing for the four-wheel drive as well.

Inside, the listing says that the air conditioning has recently been replaced with an original Mercedes compressor bracket. The rear window is a slide opener if for some reason the air conditioning is not sufficient. You can tell by the photos that this truck is almost brand new. There is plastic in the driver-side footwell on some floor mat. All the surface areas are clean and nothing looks aged in any way.

The bed of the truck folds down on three sides, a helpful feature considering the height of the bed for tire and suspension clearance. The seller notes the frame has been extended from the factory, but they have reinforced it and have installed wider axles. You will want to clarify some details about that. Other than that, this truck looks to be an incredible candidate for some serious off-road adventures. For just about the same price as a new Gladiator, you can have this. That seems like a simple choice to me.

$62,000? I’ll take a new Colorado diesel and keep the tens of thousands of dollars in change…

As UK Paul indicates this MB is obviosly a former vehicle out of some European army. It has mil-spec everything, and given its like-new appearance and no tactical markings it probably spent more time in military storage than in active service.

From personal experience I know NO military vehicle will look this unmolested very long after it gets in the hands of soldiers. I drove with and in several similar Gs (4cyl 240GD with fixed body/bed, full canvas) whilst in the army. At the time, army safety regulations prohibited speeds in excess of 43mph for wheeled/21mph for tracked vehicles. That was never any issue, that puny MB would NEVER reach that speed anyway, even without radio set, the 10 soldiers and their corresponding gear it was intended to carry! However; those F/R lockers gave the Geländewagen shockingly good off-road capabilities, only limitation would be the less-than-ideal A/S tires.

Let’s hope the turbo upgrade helps this 5cyl in the performance department, still I doubt it’ll suffice. 62k? One can build a just as capable trail rig for WAY less $. This G has completely different properties than the ones celebs drive

local_sheriff … Which Army and where/when did they impose those speed regs ? I was stationed in Germany in the 60’s and we had no such rules that I knew about. Perhaps because we had the Autobahn and sometimes had to go all the way across what was then West Germany. In my case, as Battalion pay officer, to deliver and get paychecks “signed” by soldiers incarcerated at Mannheim Military Prison. Long, cold ride in a jeep…but faster than 43 mph, I’ll guarantee ! Likewise, when the Soviets invaded Czechoslovakia in ’68 our tanks sure as heck went far faster than 21mph down the A’bahn to the border. We also had mechanics/crewmen that knew how to disengage/disable the devices regulating speed on those 52 ton monsters. Not for the faint of heart ! I’d actually love to have this G to use as a daily driver here and freak-out all the locals and university kids !

I’ve always loved these Mercedes-Benz G-Wagens. I knew that they came in a variety of body styles, from SUVs, to pickup trucks, like this one. I’m not sure I’d be willing to pay $100k, or even $60k, however rare and special they may be. I’d be willing to give up $30k for a driver, possibly $40k if it has a Diesel engine.
