This is no mirage, well, actually it is a Mirage camper shell on the back of a Chevy S-10 cab and chassis. It’s about as space-age as it gets and this 1984 Chevrolet S-10 Mirage camper can be found here on eBay with an unmet opening bid of $6,500 and a $7,500 buy it now price. It’s located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Let’s check it out.
This is one cool, space-age rig. The seller says “This could be the last S10 Mirage in existence as most were built on Toyota chassis and some were built on Ford Rangers.” I don’t know if I’ve seen one on a Chevy S-10 but in doing some research I did run across a few examples. This looks like a nice one, the truck portion looks rock solid at least from the photos and the underside shots.
The camper shell portion is.. different. They say “There are so many things you could do with this little NASA Alien spaceship.” It does look space’y, not as in spacey, but related to outer space. Usually, the cab portion of a Class C motorhome (on a truck or van chassis with a cab and bare frame behind the cab) is painted white or somehow color-coordinated with the camper portion, but not in this case. They couldn’t look any less alike than they do: a square, black Flintstones-like S-10 cab, and a crazy curvy white Jetsons-like camper. But, how cool is that rear-opening hatch? I can see this being a motorcycle hauler.
The cab portion looks good if not very good, if not great, if not perfect, if not.. ok, enough already, it looks very good. Power steering, power brakes, automatic transmission, and AC would make for a pretty nice ride I’m guessing, even with that big, mostly-hollow camper shell behind you.
Hey, speaking of that, here it is. There doesn’t appear to be any kitchen or bathroom, and there’s not really much else other than a couch/bed, a small cabinet, and a floor-to-ceiling closet on the other side. The cabover bed portion looks really small, there is no way I would fit up there and I’m guessing that my feet would be hanging over by a foot on the couch/bed, too. But, my motorcycles would be safe and dry! There are no engine photos but this one has a 2.8L V6 and it “starts on first click.” The seller finishes the description by saying “Perfect use for rolling art studio, Flea market, mobile office, food truck, traveling man or woman cave, extra bedroom. Mother in law quarters, Moon unit, Mars rover, Tail gate party, dressing room, Movie truck. Fly in and road trip back home, this one is a runner.” This is super unique, is it too unique for you or could you find a use for this S-10 Mirage?
Needs wheelie bars,,, IDK, has a couple things going for it, dual wheels, somewhat aerodynamic, not a box, looks comfy, back hatch, a definite plus, but,,, still, dangerous as heck in a stiff wind, anemic 2.8 with your foot to the floor, awful S-10 seats, just weird, and living in Colorado, I’ve seen all kinds, never this.
Swap in a V-8 and related drivetrain, paint it all the same color. It’s gotta be a slug with that 2.8, I had a same year S10 Blazer, so I know of which I speak, lol. I like though, definitely different.
Gone.
Shell, definitely the keyword on this one but you could certainly choose your own adventure in terms of outfitting as a camper. Considering what isn’t there, it seems a tad pricey to me.
Agreed, all your getting is a place to sit and lie down. Had an S-15 with a cap on it and built a platform just higher than the wheel wells with a big pull out drawer under it for storage. Easily slept two people.
Purchased by Elon Musk. Next stop- Mars.
Screams- “Take me to Roswell or Area51”!
Dual drive wheels on an S-10?
heres mine new toy
