Last of the Breed: 1991 Ford Country Squire LX Wagon

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

As a car enthusiast, I sometimes find some sadness can set in. That’s the time when a long established model that you may have owned or just would have liked to have owned, is discontinued. One of those is the Ford Country Squire. This 1991 example is the last year that the Country Squire was made. This super nice example is for sale here on eBay by Barnfinds reader, Gene P. of Knoxville, Tennessee.

In the early seventies, Ford called themselves the Wagonmaster. Much as they are the sales leader in pickup trucks now, in the seventies and through much of the full-size Ford wagon’s duration, they were the station wagon sales leader. Ford never discontinued the woodside look after the real wood was no longer used. Most other makes got rid of the real wood siding in the fifties on their station wagons. But they saw what a great seller Ford had with the top of the line Country Squire (equipped with simulated woodgrain siding), and by the mid-sixties, other makes were bringing back the simulated woodgrain siding for their top of the line station wagons.

If Lincoln had built a station wagon, this could be it. That interior is just as nice as any found in the eighties or early nineties Lincolns. Gene has left nothing missing from his thorough description of the Country Squire LX. He describes the tan cloth interior as immaculate and the carpeting great. The only interior flaw is a little staining on the removable rear cargo mat.

It’s hard to believe by looking at the engine, exterior and interior pictures that this wagon has 108,000 miles. The engine is a 5.0 V-8 and the air conditioner has been converted to R-134A. It starts and runs beautifully and the transmission shifts great, having benefitted from a rebuild in 2010.

While there are many superlatives of this 27-year-old station wagon, Gene is upfront about a few of its flaws. This includes a cracked chrome bezel on the cornering light, some minor fading of the woodgrain edge trim, and a small oil leak. But if you are interested in his Country Squire LX, you probably won’t have to worry about getting it trailered back to your home. The tires are almost new, it has been serviced recently, and Gene even drove the station wagon on a 900-mile road trip to the beach in July. As of this writing, there are 12 bids with a high bid of $3,450, but the reserve is not met. Is this something you would cherish as a classic, use as a daily driver, or use sparingly when the cargo and passenger space is needed?

Before cars, trucks where designed by engineers and designers- who knows automotive business.
Today – no engineers or designers – only computers operators.

@Wheelman. Yeah, but they are real barges, not anywhere near as desirable as the Ford wagon IMO.

I agree on the barge comment. we had a 79 Buick estate wagon for awhile classy wagon…my mom’s friend loaded us his 72 LTD wagon when we were car poor. someone decided to stop when I behind him put it in reverse and back up he never looked back I couldn’t backup fast enough and BAM he hit the wagon put a dime sized dent in the point of the bumper he got a fair size crease in his. his being a Dodge truck I was happy to have the huge chrome bumper that everyone bad mouths. for me that is the very definition of Ford Tough :)

if the reserve is not unrealistic someone should jump on this car. No, they don’t make them like this anymore and now it’s all silly SUVs that no one should own.

Bought the twin to this; just had root beer brown metallic, and a brown cloth interior…one owner and loaded, even had the moon roof. Every document from day 1, including the special order form. Drove it for a couple of years and had a blast, especially during a trip to S. California had a “Hey Griswold” moment! Kinda wish I still had it.

I appreciate the write-up by BF and all of your comments! It’s unfortunate that the car didn’t sell, so I have decided to relist it on ebay as a classified instead of an auction. This time, I have included the option of making an offer. I encourage any potential buyer to check it out! It really is a nice vehicle. Thanks again!
