Update 6/22/11 – Someone finally snagged this wonderful Quattro for the BIN price of $14,250. We hope they give it a good home.

In the late ’70s and early ’80s Group 4 Rally racing was one of the fastest growing and most popular rally groups in the world. In ’79 FISA legalized all-wheel drive for Group 4 racing, which later became Group B. In an attempt to take advantage of this change in rules, Audi developed the Quattro. Audi’s all-wheel drive coupe took the rally scene by storm, dominating nearly every event they entered. To meet homologation regulations, Audi built a limited number of road going Quattros. This 1983 Quattro was likely one of the first to make it to the States. Find it on eBay with a BIN price of $14,250.

The popularity of the Ur or original Quattro is grown massively in recent times. The performance of these cars is pretty impressive for a car built in the early ’80s. We would be sure to inspect the engine very carefully, the seller says he recently had it service. But we are always careful with turbo engines from the ’80s, especially cars that had troubles with timing belts.

The interior in this car is actually in decent shape for a car from the ’80s, but we are kind of surprised by the wear for a car that supposedly only has 16k on it. Maybe someone just liked sitting in the car pretending they were racing up Pikes Peak.

These cars were really well built cars, but considering there were only a few thousand built and about 600 that made it our way so sourcing parts maybe difficult. And because of the rally history of the Quattro name many of these cars were heavily abused, so take your time combing over this one. Also, the early Quattro bodies were made of thin steel and can rust out, so be sure to check the inside of the fenders for rust.
