Not A Bandit Clone: 1978 Pontiac Trans Am Y82

One of the more polarizing cars to ever hit the streets might be the Pontiac Tran Ams of the late-1970’s. It seems like one crowd loves them, while the other crowd wouldn’t be caught dead even looking at one. For those in the first crowd, this 1978 Trans Am Y82, listed here on eBay, might be worth checking out.

One nice thing about the one listed here is that there is a pretty good description. I appreciate that the seller describes the car honestly and let’s interested parties know that it’s a sizable project. Although non-original, it does sport a 400 Pontiac from just a few years earlier. Attention is given to the fact that it doesn’t appear to be installed correctly and that the internal condition is unknown.

The interior certainly leaves something to be desired in terms of condition but doesn’t appear to be in terrible shape. The seller states that the driver’s floorboard will need to be replaced, indicating some issues with rust. One picture of the frame appears to have some rot, which is not a real good sign for the rest of the car. A total restore would be the biggest consideration when looking at a project like this.

I’ve always appreciated the black and gold color combinations on these Trans Ams. From what I understand, 1978 was a transitional year from the tribal decal lettering to the block style lettering. I’ve been under the impression that the tribal lettered cars were the truly special ones, but maybe I’m wrong? The $6,950 Buy It Now price seems a little high for a non-original Y82 like this one. Would it be a worthwhile project at a lower bid price?

Interesting, i’ve always thought of them as “Teutonic” decal lettering rather than tribal. But i also was sure those were the special/fast ones & used to look for them when i spied a T/A.

I agree the price is high but i bet it brings something close to it being a spec’d as it is with 4-speed even in rough condition/

Timmy, Even tho you might be right bout the price. I personally think it would be pretty hard to make a T/A a sleeper due to the fact that they kinda stand out. maybe not but that’s my thought.
