Not So Luxurious: 1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Named after the extravagant home of one of the most historic Grand Prix races, the Chevrolet Monte Carlo was meant to give buyers a taste of the luxurious life. These big personal luxury coupes definitely offered their occupants plenty of leg room. This one is said to be a survivor, but in its current condition, it won’t be wowing you with luxury. That being said, it looks like a great starting point for a project and can be found here on eBay in Buffalo, New York with a BIN of $6,000 and the option to make an offer.

For ’72, the 4-speed manual and SS options were dropped from the options list, as these cars were more about luxury and less about performance. That doesn’t mean you couldn’t still option one out to be fast, with the base engine being a 350 V8 and options all the way up to a 270 horsepower 454. This one came with the 350, but there’s no word on if it’s the 165 or 175 horsepower version.

This car was equipped with the standard vinyl bench seat, but as you can see the interior is going to need be redone. All the auxiliary systems are said to be working, the AC even kicks on.

The paint is looking pretty said and is missing in quite a few areas. While it’s original, there isn’t hope of saving it. I suppose if you just want a great driver and aren’t concerned about the way it looks, this could be a good one!

The BIN is in Fantasyland, which resides in Orlando, not Buffalo.

Yes, fantasyland is absolutely right. It’s an original car with potential, and I hope someone preserves it or restores it to original and not s**t rig the heck out of it, but he’s lucky to get $1000 for it the way it is. Why do people think their car is worth it’s weight in gold?

Why do people think their car is worth it’s weight in gold? Simply b/c they’re blinded by “I haven’t seen one like it on the road in ages” and/or “MINE is so much better than any of the other junkers they’re selling”
$6k for this tired, worn out Monte .. $70k for the 76 Eldo from yesterday .. lets not get into the laughable asking for the Chargers, Challengers, & Cuda’s The collector car community has lost their minds.

the ad states that it is a VA car , looks pretty solid to me, even if it were a NY car

It’s certainly worth the money. The interior light works, big CB antennae on back, and several cans of oil in the trunk. What more do you need? Wait….nevermind, it doesn’t have an 8-track.

After looking at this for 6k, I am kicking myself for not buying an SS454 Monte that was mint for 25k last year… I just hesitated too long and somebody else grabbed it. Oh well, he who hesitates.

It’d be worth doing if it weren’t for the
6K asking price. 2,500 dollars and not
a penny more! Seems like the gentleman
in Buffalo is smoking the same stuff as
the fellow with the ’70 Nova I saw earlier.
To me, they’re both delusional! They both
need to step away from the bong and face reality–their cars aren’t worth the
prices they’re asking for them. With
that said, I’m off to bed.

I bought one of these out of a garage in northern Maine back in the 80’s. The car looked and ran great! A few months later, cruising along at 50 mph on a two lane straightaway the entire rearend dropped out of it and passed me before I spun out into a field. “Rust never Sleeps”

I probably wouldn’t file these under muscle cars Josh. Lots of better examples around for not too much more money.

Jack I agree. The question becomes, can you make the gold one better than the green one for 4500 bucks. I think the answer is no, you can’t. That makes the green one a far better deal.

Rare to see one all together….we parted these well with the disk brakes going to early Camero’s/SS and the dash for the Chevelle’s….if it had a 12 bolt that also was sourced…..and everybody wanted those darn 350’s and the trans….a good part out car…but this looks like it could be saved !

I live in Wisconsin. Vinyl Top spells rust at the windshield and back glass. I know I had a ’71 in the late 70’s, and had that issue.

I like the body style of the 70-72 Monte Carlos. If you can get this one for under 2grand…it might be a nice touring car restomod project. Properly stanced…lose the vinyl top…dark paint job…bucket seats. Go for it.

Much better deal and start for sure!
I like the orange 🍊 color too!

I like the early montes more than the later versions.

Back in HS everyone had one in the lot and we used to joke the M Carlo is like an A@@ because everyone has one 🤠🤠🤠🤠
I started junior year HS with a 55 Chevrolet belair hardtop 327 3/4 cam headers etc. and finished with a 69 Ralley Z28 Camaro myself 👍👀

I would like a 70 MC four speed model though…,

Not to upset the purest but I always wanted a 70 MC to cut the top off and fit / convert a conv top , windshield frame top for clips and add supports with
center ballast from and early chevelle top parts and underneath as this car seemed logical for GM to make it 😮👀😎

it seems to be a looker for me, and, it is just your base MC, if the roof can be rescued, great! leave the vinyl off redo the interior ( tho he states the seats are protected, if so, leave them) the case of Pennzoil is a red flag for me , tho he paints a nostalgic picture the $6G is the BIN price I have seen worse go for more

I had this exact same Monte, same color and vinyl top even, gave $500 back around 1980, it had a good ride, and even got 20 mpg with the V8. I traded it for a 1964 El Camino.

The Monte Carlo of this year has some great rear bumper action. Definite plus that it still runs and is a driver.

Think pricing is fair. We are buying the sheet metal and drive train more than the concept of a well prepped vehicle.

Years ago, a similar model vehicle like this was present in the Fast and Furious movie, entitled, Tokyo Drift.

‘These big personal luxury coupes definitely offered their occupants plenty of leg room.’

For the front passengers. Rear passengers got 32.3″ of leg room.

Less than an AMC Hornet 2 door by about 3″. Less than a GM N Body from 1986-91 [34.1]. Less than a current Ford Focus [33.1].

All that length and size went into Chevrolet’s longest hood. A bragging point in ads apparently.

Longest hood, requiring what must be the longest fan shroud ever.

Where I live, these all seem to end up as race cars at the local short track. I suppose the high price will save it from that fate.

Actually, it’s an inch less legroom than a Vega 2 door notch according to Motor Trend’s 1972 Buyers guide.

I am on my 2nd 72 Monte. These cars are loved by those of us who owned/own them. They are always looked at as not in the same league as the Chevelle, Corvette, Impala, Malibu, Nova models.

This is what keeps the prices in a more moderate range. That being said, the market will bear whatever anybody is willing to pay.

An independent inspection agent is always a good move if the car cannot be viewed personally.

I agree with all those regarding price. It’s a $1500.00 car if it runs, and it would be a nice restoration project if surgery is not required.

I grew up in Colorado where cars don’t rot away from rust but live 45 minutes outside Buff. Ny. There is no way in hell I would buy a classic car from this area. NO WAY, underneath I bet this car looks like it’s been sitting under the ocean with more rust then good metal. So. Even if the price wasn’t 4 grand too much, I would still go find one out west.

Had a ’72 Monte Carlo 40 years ago, the vinyl top only covered the back half of the roof, coming to a point in the middle. Also had oval opera windows like an old Lincoln. One car I never should have let go. Convertible conversion was not unusual in California then.
