In 1977, the only movie that did better in theaters than Smokey and the Bandit was Star Wars. This 1977 Pontiac Trans Am is not a “Bandit” or Y84 car but it is a black Trans Am, at least mostly black. It is a project car because it needs paint and interior work. The car is said to be in running condition. It is located at a dealer in Gray Court, South Carolina and is listed for $13,500. The dealer says in the ad to make him or her an offer that they can’t refuse. There are 9 days remaining in the listing on eBay.
Depending in what state you were residing in, buyers had multiple engine options in 1977. The L78 400 cubic inch V8 engine was the standard powerplant and was rated at 180 horsepower. The last year for the Pontiac 455 cubic inch V8 was in 1976 and in its place was the W72 400 cubic inch V8 that was rated at 200 horsepower. Based on the chrome valve covers, this is what this car appears to be optioned with. In California, emissions were all the rage and the Pontiac 400 was not allowed in the Golden State. So all Trans Ams in California were equipped with the Oldsmobile 403 cubic inch V8 engine rated at 185 horsepower.
The interior is all there but not in great or even good condition. The dash is cracked and the front seats are shredded. This car was equipped with the base black vinyl interior. It was optioned with air conditioning and an automatic transmission. The car does have the optional 8 track player which is highly desirable. The seller states that the trunk has some rust and some other small areas have rust too. I like the rear window louvers and have a set on my 1978 Trans Am.
More pictures and the owner’s description can be seen here on eBay. The car is riding on stock Pontiac Rally II rims but the seller states that they have a set of aluminum snowflake wheels. This car is going to need some work but the seller seems reasonable in setting the price and maybe something could be negotiated between $11k and $12k.
Wow, 13,500? I remember when a car in this condition was cut up by hot rodders for the front suspension and other parts. There are a lot of 50’s trucks that are running around on trans am suspension. This makes 40 for the gold car seem like a pretty good deal
I am reasonably active in the T/A market ,and cars in this dilapidated condition are for sale every day for 5 to ten grand ,10 would be way too much.
This seller comes across as a junkyard selling whatever car they have a title for. Look at their other listings, lots of really rough looking cars and parts. They have 542 listing and have sold 42 items over the last 90 days, a 3% per month sell through rate means bad inventory or a pricing problem.
There are better cars out there for potential buyers willing to put in the work. The market seems like it’s cooling off and better stuff is starting to become available, now is the time to be selective.

Is the aluminum foil on the pedals there to ward off the bad ju ju?
I ride by this dealer all time, they have some nice stuff, but it’s all over priced. He says he’s going out of business, but at these prices he’s going to be sitting on this inventory for a while.
Just wait for the auction unless the seller decides to crush everything because nobody will pay the inflated asking prices.
I was there a few years ago, he said he was going out of business then too……asked me if I’d be interested in buying the place.
And yes, all his vehicles are overpriced.
That’s way too much money for a ’77 in this condition. I would say more like five grand, tops.
Is this one that rhe Bandit left with Big & Little Enus to go and get clam chowder?
