General Motors was impacted by a major labor union strike in 1972 so there were less than 6,000 GTOs built during the year. This 1972 Pontiac GTO is located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and is for sale here on eBay for a Buy It Now price of $5,741.97. I don’t think it is worth a penny more than $5,741! The car appears to be originally a Code 75 red with black interior.
The seller states that the car has rust but is not a rust bucket. With that said, the left quarter panel is tacked on and trunk lid is not secured. The front end is reported to have enough bolts for transport but the car is definitely not fully assembled. This is important to know if you have a shipping company pick it up for you.
The 1972 GTO was available with three engine options. The standard engine was a 400 cubic inch V8 engine that was rated at 250 horsepower. This car is said to have been equipped with the base 400 cubic inch V8 and automatic transmission. Optional engines were the L75 455 cubic inch engine and the HO455 cubic inch engine. In 1972, the GTO was changed backed to an option package on the Le Mans like it was in 1964. From 1965 to 1971, the GTO was its own separate model.
This car is obviously going to need some work to get it running and a lot more work to get it in show condition. I own a 1972 GTO and it is my favorite model year. When my buddies ride in it, they cannot believe how well it handles and rides. My youngest daughter claims the car as her own and drove it to high school in her junior and senior years. A restored 1972 GTO should sell in the $20,000 to $30,000 range depending on the quality of the restoration. If you could buy this one for about $3,000 to $4,000 and do all the work yourself, you might end up where you are not too far upside down financially but that is not the reason most of us enjoy the muscle car hobby.
You are a brave man to let a teenager drive your prize…hope someone saves this….
She babies the car and we live close to her high school. I know that I would have driven it differently in my HS years!
Bruce, 65 gto was an option package on a lemans also. Gto didn’t get its own VIN until 66. And let’s not forget on the Ventura in 74.
I own a 72 LeMans with the endura package, rally IIs buckets, console. It looks like a gto. Its my baby. Can’t someone that does this to a poor car like this be charged with something? Assault? Attempted murder? We see a lot of tragic car messes on here but this one feels personal. Bet I have nightmares tonight!
Better off buying one already done. 72’s are not the most saught after gto’ s and you can buy a clean one for around 20-25k. Plus you’ll save yourself a lot of headaches!
Pontiac did not offer a GTO in 1972 you had order a Lemans with a GTO package ,the GTO had its own VIN code and the code was 242 and the last year the GTO was produced was in 1971 so unless it has a 242 VIN code it is not Pontiac it is a lemans with a GTO package to check to see if its a true Pontiac you can get in contact with them and get a window sticker made from the Pontiac Historical Society they kept record of every Pontiac vehicle ever made
