Seller’s Description: The overall condition plus how fast it is! Just a great car with good bones, needing just a few things to be a solid collector or daily driver. Not many around due to rust issues but this one has been in the south all its life. Great color combination. Runs fast, very smooth and quiet. al

Body Condition: Body is in straight condition with nothing out of alignment including door gaps, hood and bumpers/fenders. Appears to be no bondo anywhere. There is surface rust in the paint on the hood. Top is presentable but has minor cuts as shown. Glass is perfect. Rear windows will not operate. I fixed one motor but could not get the lift back in place so it is in the trunk ready for a more patient mechanic than me. The power motor itself is a simple fix. Front windows work fine. Tires are old but show good tread and little to no cracking. There is no frame/rocker/floorpan rust other than surface. Exhaust is excellent and quiet.

Mechanical Condition: This LTD is VERY nice on the road, with great torque off the line and smooth power from the 400 cid motor. No hesitation or bogs. Transmission shifts perfectly up and down. It is everything it should be, driving very fast, quiet, straight and smooth. The way this car goes down the road is the best part about it. Nothing compares among today’s vehicles. It does not sag with a full load of friends and corners pretty well too. Braking is quiet and firm. Car runs cool even in 100 degree temps and crawling traffic. AC powers on and blows, compressor engages and hose lines get cold, but the cabin air just cools slightly. All vacuum vents switch perfectly from defrost to dash to floor

These ’70s land yachts always felt fast, stomp the gas and the four barrel sucks air, a dramatic downshift from the automatic transmission, the marshmallow suspension rolls back and the gas gage moves quickly toward “E”. Just enjoy that sensory ecstasy as every modern car in the last 10 years pulls away from you with no fuss at all.

      I bet it has a 2 barrel.

There is no comparison to the sound of the secondaries opening up, the whoosh of the air being sucked into the carburetor, the roar of the mill accepting the mixture, and the experience of feeling your car being shot down the highway. That will never get old, “God, I love the smell of napalm in the morning, it smells like victory”.

Especially with GMs. We used to flip the air cleaner lid over to get the full effect of the foghorn sound. Sure cars are much better today, faster, etc, but not as much fun.

Ya, but what sounds better is the secondaries of 2-4bbl carbs opening up, and the push deeper into the back of the seat! Then the headers really begin to sound really good!!! I really miss those street racing days on Woodward!! And, yes, I really cruised Woodward in the ’60’s!

My roommate in college had the 2-door “coupe” version of this car, and even that body style was huge. Still, as big as it was, one night on campus he had a “dude, where’s my car?” moment. We found it the next day.

Cool ride no doubt. I’ve never seen a 400 with factory installed 4-v.

Nice car, hope it finds a loving home.

Decal on the breather does indicate 400 – 2V…I believe you are correct @KSwheatfarmer.

Where are you getting 4V from?

I appreciate the condition of this car. It is in amazing condition, BUT, I found these to be the most boring looking vehicles from that era. They did nothing for me. Maybe because every detective/cop show I watched growing up, the episodes were filled with them. Barnaby Jones, Streets of San Francisco, etc. Me and two friends drove from NYC to Virginia Beach in an LTD like this. With the Alpine stereo and Jensen Triaxle speakers blaring Deep Purple and ZZ Top the whole way.
    Good times.

Why does the spec sticker say ‘This vehicle conforms to USEPA regulations applicable to 1977 model year new motor vehicles’ if it’s a 1972??

Wow Cardoc, that is a real head-scratcher.

This is one true fact though. You can go 50 mph over a speed bump and it isn’t felt at all. Just like you never went over a big bump. I used to do it in mine all the time just to show people how it rode.

I did that a couple of weeks ago with mine and the left front hub cap went flying off.

      It is not advised.

This car reminds me of the Dirty Harry movie “Magnum Force” where a 71 or 72 Ford Galaxie is featured in the final chase scene of the movie….and where the corrupt Police Lt. Briggs drives away in it with a bomb on board and the car explodes….

You can buy it and spend 13K in restoration and you will have an 8K car IMHO

Why would you spend anything on this.

      Drive it as is.

Not every car has to be a museum piece.

It’s a nice car with too high of an asking price. Negotiate with the Seller and buy it. Give it what it needs and enjoy. When you get bored or whatever, sell it for what you can get for it and don’t worry.

I took my drivers test in my Mom’s 71 , 4 , door Brougham , 400 M , C6 auto in 77 . That was a POS from new . I stuffed it in the spot and got my licence . I had a low mile 72 Country Squire a few years later I bought cheap from an old lady , it had the trailer package , 429 ,C6 with a posi rear and fully loaded . That was a decent Ford .

This is one true thing. I had one of these and I could do 50mph over a speed bump and you couldn’t feel it inside the car. The wheels went up and the body didn’t move. Very smooth riding car and also gorgeous.

All the surface rust under the hood indicates a damp environment.

I just love the comment nothing today drives like THIS ONE! Give that a moment to sink in, there really is a reason for THAT!
Fast, I definitely think NOT completely boring YES I would go with that!!

These beasts were comfortable rides, but definitely not fast. I’ve owned various versions of this car.The 400 was enough engine to move you around town well enough and could easily handle highway speeds, but they were not meant to be fast cars. I drove a 72 wagon from California to Florida pulling a 10 foot covered trailer. Now it did overheat crossing that long hot stretch between California and Kingston, Arizona forcing some revisions in that I had to leave the trailer in Kingston planning to return at a later date to retrieve it. But it was sold at auction before I could get back.

It’s actually not. Finding an after market intake for a 400 can be a challenge. I could be wrong but I don’t think the factory ever offered a 4V manifold for a 400.

I believe the block is the same as the 351 so it shouldn’t be very hard.

I had the heavy wire wheel covers a d never lost one. The clips holding it on needed to be bent a little better.

Those are the caps I have. They weigh like 25 pounds each.

The clips were just fine, but I rarely slowed down speed bumps, but I learned my lesson.

Miguel, that’s the thing. They are not. The 400, (often called the 400M) is not the same. It takes a completely different manifold. Research this in the Summit web site.
