READER AD: 1987 Chevrolet Blazer

Classic SUVs are really starting to gain interest with collectors, but most of these rigs have been driven to death. This Blazer is a refreshingly clean example that is in nice solid condition. It’s ready to drive, but will need a few things fixed to be an exceptional truck. Take a closer look at Bill S’s ad via the link below!

What Makes It Special? Originally a California vehicle. The body panels are in clean shape. It was stored for about 5 years in our barn, and we decided to revive it to its current state. We don’t know the exact mileage, it shows 36000 on the odometer, we assume it’s 136,000, but we don’t know. A lot of upgrades have been done.

Body Condition: This is one of those projects that turned out to be bigger than at first thought. Some of the paint was lifting like most vehicles in that era, so we were going to do a quick sand and shoot. We ended up stripping the whole thing to bare metal revealing no rust. There also wasn’t any bad dents. We used an epoxy primer, and a base coat/clear coat and buff paint.
We put a dash cover on and replaced the carpets last year.

Mechanical Condition: The previous owner put a rebuilt motor in less than 1000 miles ago, and we had to have the transmission rebuilt. Went through the brakes and joints. We put a new AC compressor and valves on. We changed two of the wiper components and it probably still needs a motor mechanism to work totally proper. We changed the turn signal stem; everything there works but the cruise that doesn’t appear to be hooked up. We fixed the shift selector cable. Also had to special source components to get the tailgate window to work.

Asking prices on these have gone to the freaking MOON lately! Was scrolling down, thinking to myself “would totally grab it for $6-7K, but I bet they’re asking in the low teens”… and then see they want just shy of $20K. Uffda!

Many people, myself included, like old trucks. Many people, myself excluded, are willing and able to part with strong money for good examples. That’s the free market at work. Why is that stupid?

While I’ll agree prices on squarebodies have skyrocketed to a point above what I consider sensible, we just have to realize there aren’t so many nice examples left. Cosmetically this one seems more or less like they used to when they were just a couple years old. Unlike 10-12 years back I rarely see any late K5s or even Suburbans in daily usage and those few I spot are rusted out, beat up junkers.
    Try find a better one!

Nice original square bodies are few and far between, even in California. Many of them were used and absued, and many were hacked up. Sure, the featured example has had some cosmetic work and minor repairs done, and a few more of the latter are necessary. Based on the photos, finding a nicer one would be an uphill battle.

I remember the K5 Blazer as being big, crazy gas sucking, and rode stiff. Way cool, even back then, but $20K? So many other choices at that price point.

The pickups are way up in price it only makes sense the blazers would follow just like the 68-72 models!!! There are still some nice trucks out there!!!
