This 1979 Pontiac Trans Am is located in Tacoma, Washington and is basically a barn find that Mitchell G. sent to us. Before we could write it up the first time, the eBay auction expired but the seller relisted the car. You can see the new ad here on eBay. The Trans Am has the PHS (Pontiac Historical Services) paperwork to show that it is a Y84 Special Edition optioned Trans Am. The seller is asking $9,500 or best offer. The seller relisted it the car for another 26 days.

The pictures indicate that this car is rusty and may have been underwater at some point. This car is equipped with the base engine for the Trans Am in 1979 which was the L80 Oldsmobile 403 cubic inch V8 engine.  It was the only engine available for California Trans Ams due to emissions regulations and was rated at 185 horsepower and 315 lb ft of torque. This engine was only paired  with the Turbo 350 automatic transmission. In the other 49 states, two additional engines were available: the L37 Pontiac 301 cubic inch V8 engine and the W72 Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8 engine. The L37 engine delivered a wimpy 150 horsepower and was equipped with a 4 barrel carburetor. The 301 Pontiac engine was available with either an automatic or 4 speed manual transmission. The rarest engine option for the 1979 Trans Am was the W72 Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8 engine, which generated 220 horsepower and came exclusively with a 4-speed transmission.

While this car is not in good shape it was well optioned from the factory. As shown, the car has worn camel hobnail custom interior. The custom interior came with upgraded seats and door panels. It appears the car is equipped with tilt steering, cruise control, power windows, air conditioning and T-Tops. The Y84 Special Edition package cost a whopping $1,329 on top of a base price $6,699. With all the options on this car, the MSRP was more than $10,000. All Y84 SE cars came with special gold pinstriping on Code 19 black paint with T-Tops, WS6 Performance Suspension, gold spoke steering wheel, and gold, instead of silver, bezels on the dash and console shifter plate. This car looks like it is missing the gold bezel on the shifter and the dash looks silver or could just be faded.

This car will need a restoration to bring it back to its former glory. The seller states that the running gear is in unknown condition. The car has rust in the quarters and is being sold as is. As can be seen, the car is riding on factory 15×8 aluminum wheels which came with the WS6 Special Performance Handling Package. Production numbers for the Y84 Trans Am was over 11,000 units in 1979 with the majority (9,874) being built with the Oldsmobile 403 cubic inch V8 power train.
