Today’s garage find is listed here on eBay, it is located in San Mateo, California, and is listed at $29,000; there are 3 days left to bid on this limited production, specialty-equipped truck. The current bid is at $29,800. According to the seller, he purchased the Syclone from the original owner 12 years ago. The Syclone also comes with a Vehicle History Report, which supports its originality and mileage; the odometer shows 34,322 miles. Total production for the Syclone was 2995 units for the 1991 model year (MY). GMC sent regular production Sonoma’s (GM’s compact truck) from its factory to an aftermarket outfitter, Production Automotive Services (PAS), to convert them into Syclones.
You could almost call this truck a “parts-bin” truck. GMC borrowed the transmission from the Corvette, the full-time AWD system from the Astro van, the instrument cluster from the Turbo Sunbird, and the turbo from the Buick Grand National of the 1980s. It was equipped with a GMC-sourced turbocharged (Mitsubishi), and liquid-intercooled, 4.3 litre V-6, which produced an eye-popping (for that era) 280 HP and 350 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 mph times were in the range of 4.3 sec, still respectable by today’s standards, I might ad! Word has it that GMC posted conservative power numbers so as not to scare the insurance companies. The Syclone was the first USA production truck to come equipped with 4-wheel ABS. You could have any color you wanted, as long as it was black.
This truck shows exceptionally well in the supplied photos. The aluminum rims shine brightly, with no visible damage to the rims. The original paint is spotless and appears to be devoid of chips and shows no rust at all. You don’t need a mirror to comb your hair with this one! The interior is quite clean with no visible blemishes to the seats and panels; it also comes with the Syclone-specific floor mats. The seller has just completed a minor service to the vehicle, as well as installing new tires. Although there are no photos of the engine bay and underbody, one can assume that its cleanliness will match the rest of the truck. Be sure to ask for some photos if you plan on pursuing this further.
With its low production numbers, artificially under-advertised power ratings, and exceptional handling, the Syclone is still held in high regard by collectors of sport trucks. Their values continue to rise, and with good reason. This truck was America’s fastest production vehicle for the 1991 model year, bar none! This Syclone easily kept up to the Ferraris and Corvettes of the world, for that era. This is a great example of American ingenuity at its finest! This truck was made to haul… ass, not cargo! Are you willing to find a spot for this Syclone in your garage?
So someone bid more than the asking price? Lucky seller…
