Steamy Runabout: 1910 Stanley Steamer Model 60

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

You really never know what you might find crammed in an old barn, garage or warehouse. I’m sure looking at the outside of this garage, you wouldn’t ever expect to find a survivor Stanley Steamer hiding inside, but that’s exactly what you’d find. This Model 60 Runabout is said to be an original survivor that’s ready to be restored. The seller claims it’s been in storage since the ’70s and that all the major components are present. It’s currently listed here on eBay in Waterbury, Connecticut with an opening price of $71,500.

The seller also has a partially restored Stanley Steamer Model 75 currently listed for sale as well, but it’s missing some of its major components. This Runabout is said to be complete, but with only three photos to go off of, it’s hard to be sure. Of course, that’s assuming you know what to be looking for in the first place! It’s going to take a steam car specialist to confirm that this car is, in fact, complete and what all it’s going to take to restore.

I wouldn’t even know where to start with restoring something like this, but boy would it be fun to learn about. The 10 horsepower engine doesn’t sound all that powerful, but this Runabout has to be fairly light and steam engines tend to produce lots of torque. So, are you up to restoring a Stanley Steamer?

According to stanleymotorcarriage.com none of these have ever been documented as having gone all splodey, so there’s that. This one is at the Henry Ford Museum. Pretty sharp & a long slog from here to there but wouldn’t it be cool. And, yeah, it would be fun!

$71,500.00, and 3 pics? I like it, anyway. I wonder if this seller knows the seller of the Corona that was to lazy to wash it?

I wonder if this steamer operates the same as a Doble.
Just as fast forward as backward.
The backward is just plain scary, as the steering wheels would be at the back, and it would drive like a farm combine except at higher speeds.

Check out You Tube videos of Jay Leno’s Garage for his Stanley Steamer, White steam car and Howard Hughes’ Doble. Extremely interesting how this technology was used by each.

I have a freind that is the chief engineer at heritage park Calgary. He knows steam like the back of his hand. In fact I think if he were to cut his finger steam would puff out. He’s been responsible the locomotive maintenance for at least 20 years at the park. He’d be the first to tell you if you don’t know steam stay away, it’s a true killer if things go wrong. Can you say BOOM…!! I know nothing about the ins and outs of steam cars and as cool as this is I would not want any part of this car. There’s a very narrow market of people that know how to deal with these steamers and that gap is closing. JMHO.

I totally agree…….have been around a lot of steam powered boats (owned a steam turbine ship) of one type or the other……and as an equipment guy remember an antique farm tractor blowing up at a (Iowa?) state fair that killed a lot of people. During the golden age of steam river boats……..they all eventually blew up many times killing hundreds of people. Seeing steam tractors being driven down the road or at a tractor show brings the hair up on the back of my neck. I belive these were low pressure steam and the smaller boilers would bee easier to get a proper thorough inspection. I am sure it is a water loss system that would also simplify the operation.

If I remember right, Stanleys ran 600# steam, and were an “open” system, meaning that the exhaust steam was just vented to the atmosphere. The Doble steamer had a condenser in it, to recirculate the water condensed from the steam, and was considered a “closed” system. Actually, the Doble was a very advanced car for its time.

I wouldn’t want to OWN it, or maintain it, and I wouldn’t know where to begin with it, but I’m tickled by it’s very existence. It’s a 108 year old car, y’all! Love it love it love it.

Recip steam engines are rated using Indicated Horsepower (IHP). It is calculated from using the steam pressure to the cylinder(s), the piston area, the stroke, and the number of working strokes per minute.

There were still a few running around where I grew up at! I was born about 30 years later, but I can remember seeing them, not often, but just a memory!
