    Single-Family Survivor: 1980 Triumph Spitfire

This 1980 Triumph Spitfire, now offered here on eBay, has been with the same family since new. The seller’s father purchased it in 1980, and it has remained in their care for 45 years. Showing just 45,000 miles, the British-built roadster wears green paint over a tan interior and features a 4-cylinder engine paired with a manual transmission. It’s drivable, but with a missing rear window, some oil burning, and a few minor issues, it’s best suited as a project or occasional weekend car rather than a daily driver. The clean title is in the seller’s name, and the removable hardtop shown in the photos is included.

  • Cheap Roadster! 1973 Triumph Spitfire Mk IV

Cheap Roadster! 1973 Triumph Spitfire Mk IV

This Spitfire is for sale because the owner found a prettier prospect – as he puts it, “something newer and shinier caught my eye.” Since the car was purchased for Spring driving, we can surmise that the seller hasn’t had his Spitfire for long. It’s advertised here on craigslist, reduced to $3000 after a potential buyer found surface rust on the underside. It runs well so it might complete the trip to its new garage from Norwich, Virginia. This Spitfire is from the next to last generation of a model that was introduced in 1962. Michelotti – who we can think of as Triumph’s go-to designer – dished up a nice roadster all the way back in 1960, but that poor car sat in a corner at Canley until executives from Leyland noticed it under a dust sheet. They liked it. With the Austin Healey Sprite capturing market share in the “cheap sports car” category, commercialization of the “Bomb” was approved in 1961. Thanks to Mitchell G for the tip!

  • 19k Original Miles! 1967 Triumph Spitfire Mark II

19k Original Miles! 1967 Triumph Spitfire Mark II

In the classic world, low mileage claims without verifying evidence must always be taken at face value. The general condition of some cars makes such statements seem far-fetched, while others appear plausible. That brings us to this 1967 Triumph Spitfire Mark II. Its presentation is extremely impressive, especially considering the claims made by the seller. These include the fact that most of its paint and interior trim are original and that the odometer reading of 19,421 miles is genuine. They are parting with this classic due to a pending relocation, listing the Spitfire here on Craigslist in Fair Oaks, California. They set their price at $19,500, and I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder T.J. for spotting this sweet little British survivor. (more…)

  • Spit-Six: 1980 Triumph Spitfire

    Spit-Six: 1980 Triumph Spitfire

It is fair to say that some cars suffered more than others following the adoption of tighter emission laws during the 1970s. Many classic British sports cars already featured engines with relatively modest power and torque, but the figures dropped significantly as the new regulations took hold. This 1980 Triumph Spitfire is a perfect example, although the seller has done their best to address that shortfall in a very clever way. They ditched its original four-cylinder engine, slotting a GT6 powerplant into the empty space. It presents well, although there are tasks for the buyer to complete to bring the build to its conclusion. I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder Tony P for spotting this promising project. • Take One or Both! Pair of Vintage Triumphs

Take One or Both! Pair of Vintage Triumphs

Triumph was one of many British sports cars to create a stir in the U.S. in the 1950s and 1960s Two of their most popular models were the TR3 (built from 1955 to 1962) and the Spitfire from 1962 to 1980 (one did not replace the other). The seller, self-described as a collector, has one of each for sale. Both are projects and both may be complete (though we don’t get to see the engine in the TR3). They are priced to move separately but the seller will consider a package deal. (more…)

    Extremely Affordable: 1967 Triumph Spitfire

One of the most significant challenges an enthusiast faces when embarking on a project build is locating a candidate that doesn’t break the bank before it rolls into their workshop. That makes this 1967 Triumph Spitfire worth a close look. It is a rock-solid barn find that the owner is selling with additional parts to help the buyer on their restoration path. However, its affordability might make it irresistible to many wishing to slip behind the wheel of a classic British sports car. I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder T.J. for spotting this promising project. (more…)

  • Needs Brakes: 1978 Triumph Spitfire 1500

Needs Brakes: 1978 Triumph Spitfire 1500

With winter rapidly approaching, now is the ideal time to splash some cash on a classic British sports car. I can hear some of you sighing and contemplating whether I have lost touch with reality because driving around in snow and ice behind the wheel of a drop-top doesn’t sound like fun. However, spending productive hours in the garage addressing any potential shortcomings would see the months fly past. That is the opportunity offered by this 1978 Triumph Spitfire 1500. It is a dry-climate classic with minor mechanical needs. It is also an affordable alternative for someone seeking a first project candidate. The seller has listed the Triumph here on Craigslist in Tracy, California. They set their price at $4,000, and I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder ToddK for spotting this sweet little gem. • Funky Roadster: 1979 Triumph Spitfire 1500

Funky Roadster: 1979 Triumph Spitfire 1500

The Triumph Spitfire was a small British sports car manufactured by the Leyland Motors Ltd. from 1962 until 1980. The 1979 model was the last year of production for the Spitfire and the last of the original design. However, you might be different and want a one of one design. This 1979 Triumph Spitfire has been modified into a one of a kind custom roadster. It is listed here on Craigslist for an asking price of $6,500. The seller’s comments are few but it does say that this is your chance to own a piece of roadster history! The car is located in Hartford, Connecticut and has been listed for about a week. Andrew S. Mace find this car for sale and we appreciate him sending us the link.

The 1979 Spitfire was powered by a 1,493 cc fourcylinder engine producing 53 horsepower. This was the final powerplant of Spitfire 1500 which was produced from 1974-1980. The engine had an 7.5:1 compression ratio and could reach 0-60 mph in 16.3 seconds. Nope, you read that correctly, that is not the quarter mile time that is the 0-60 time. The inline 4 cylinder engine was mated to a fourspeed manual transmission, with optional overdrive. The suspension was independent at the front and live axle at the rear, with disc brakes up front and drums in the rear. This engine has some matching wiring to go with its aqua paint job.

The interior was originally trimmed in vinyl and the car came standard with a folding softtop. In 1979, the Spitfire received a few minor changes, including a new grille and bumper, revised rear lights and suspension, and a new instrument cluster. This car has obviously been modified so I am not sure what is stock and what is custom. This Spitfire is said to run and drive great.

In addition to the funky front end, some kind of flares or wings were added to the rear quarter panels along with black striping. The Spitfire was a popular car in the 1960s and 70s and remains a soughtafter classic today. It is a simple, lightweight car that requires frequent maintenance but offers an enjoyable driving experience.

    Bid to: $5,000View Result

Triumph released the original Spitfire in 1962, with the car undergoing various running changes until the final vehicle rolled off the line in Canley, Coventry, England, in October 1980. During its illustrious career, an incredible 314,332 Spitfires found their way onto roads across the globe. Our feature car appeared in 1976, and it is a gem. Its presentation is hard to fault, and it is in excellent mechanical health. It is a turnkey classic requiring nothing but a new owner. • Bargain Brit: 1965 Triumph Spitfire Mk 1

Bargain Brit: 1965 Triumph Spitfire Mk 1

I am shocked that this listing has lasted for the two days it took me to write it up. Here on craigslist is a 1965 Triumph Spitfire Mk 1 with an asking price of just $9,200, located in Kansas City, Missouri. Perhaps this is a case of wanting to shed a convertible before the winter sets in but 1965 is in the most collectible realm of years for the Spitfire, and this car has been substantially restored, making the price look like a bargain. We have Gunter K. to thank for this sterling tip! The Spitfire was actually conceived in 1960 as a competitor to the Bugeye Sprite, but due to Standard-Triumph’s financial difficulties, it was shelved. While the little Spitfire slumbered, Standard-Triumph was merged with Leyland. In 1961, a Leyland executive noticed the prototype under a sheet in the corner of the factory, and the Spitfire was off to the races.

    Small-Block Transplant: 1976 Triumph Spitfire

In previous articles, I’ve discussed situations where companies have successfully bolted American V8 engines into classic British sports cars, with the Sunbeam Tiger standing as a shining example. Those cars were produced utilizing considerable engineering knowledge, but what if an owner performed such a conversion in a home workshop? That is the question confronting the next owner of this 1976 Triumph Spitfire, and I have to say a big thank you to Barn Finder Chuck F for spotting it for us. Located in McDonough, Georgia, you will find the Triumph listed for sale here on Facebook. You could park it in your workshop for $5,500. (more…)

Located in West Palm Beach, Florida, this little beauty is offered here on Barn Finds Classifieds with a $13,000 asking price and the seller is open to offers. (more…)

Thirty Years in the Garage: Triumph Spitfire 4 Mk2

Sometimes a car that has been well-loved passes the point where its current owner can put it back on the road. When this happens, many will enter a state of denial, holding fast to their dream until it rusts to nothing. Fortunately, that’s not the case for this classic roadster, located in Fresno, California. The long-time owner of this  Triumph Spitfire Mk2 has put it up for sale here on Triumph Experience for $1,000.

No Reserve Garage Find: 1965 Triumph Spitfire

This 1965 Triumph Spitfire is the stereotypical “one owner, little old lady” classic. The original owner recently passed away, and the seller purchased it from her estate. It runs and drives, and it appears that it wouldn’t take a lot of work to have the Triumph in a roadworthy state once again. That could make it the perfect winter project for the right person.
