Bought a solid white with black hard top new in ’72 with the 4 speed trans and 4 wheel drive. 350 with a 4 barrel and a great overall truck to do most anything with. In our case we towed race cars and occasional camping with it. Only problem we had was internal rust from the factory that required taking everything off the frame eight months later but the cowl/cab portion to paint and rustproof everything. Great rig. Got 11 mpg regardless what we did with it so added a second fuel tank. Glad to see one still in one piece. Best looking of the many similar models out there at the time.

We started seeing these in ‘69 and they really took off with the ‘71-‘72 models being the most popular. It wasn’t long before the Blazer/Jimmy replaced the family car. The vast majority of the ones out west were powered by 350 engines which were NOT all that economical. But a little fine-tuning usually smartened them right up. Smog regulations were already in effect, mostly in the form of lean mixtures and retarded advance curves. Up a couple of sizes in jets and dial in the advance so that it actually ADVANCED under 3000 rpm and it was amazing how much better they ran.

Now for this truck. There’s a lot of modifications you can do to these with a visit to the local salvage yard, something which I suspect has already been done. That soft top would last about three minutes on a windy day in the Chinook Belt so it would be best to fold it up and put it away. Fix the hard top and use it. Good truck overall but get used to the wind whistles…
