Weekend Reader Finds: March 17, 2014

Reader Finds 3-17-2014

We love to see our reader’s finds, as it gives all of us a chance to see what everyone is currently interested in and it even gives us a glimpse of possible trends. We have noticed an increased interest in old trucks and oddball cars. Just take a look at the GMC K-10 and the Diamond T. We aren’t sure if you would classify some of the more obscure American cars, such as the Plymouth Valiant, Belvedere, and Ford Fairlane, as oddballs but we have seen a definite rise in interest in them… There might have been a lot of these cars built, but in the collector world, they are typically overlooked. Perhaps it’s that the Barn Finds crowd is more diversified in its tastes, but we think all car enthusiasts are starting to see the value in some of these great cars. Both Rovers that were submitted are often overlooked as well, but are worth a look, especially the V8 powered 3500 SD1. Being overlooked isn’t always a bad thing though, as it keeps some of these cars attainable to most of us regular car guys. Be sure to check out all the other great finds your fellow readers shared with us over the weekend and also have a look at our new layout for Reader Find Recaps after the break, hopefully it is easier to navigate and locate the links to the seller’s listings!

Rough Diamond for me, but the wheels on the P6 Rover are appealing.

On first glance, I thought the 1980 Rover was a 1980 Celica Liftback. Separated at birth?

I’d take the GMC 4×4 and the ’46 Chev 3/4 ton. Neither of them were very common and would be a lot of fun to fix up.

    ’68 Rover 2000TC:

Ha ha: “The shift linkage could use an adjustment to make it shift smoother,”

I knew as few people who owned these when they were new because they were the ultimate (more of less) advanced British Saloon car. Every one of them had trouble with the shift linkage / transmission, plus a whole lot else, unfortunately.

Too bad, because the 2000TC had the potential to help the British car industry get back to where it used to be. Seller has it priced very moderately but no bids, which is worrying because there might be no takers, and it would still be a shame if it went to the crusher. The interiors are very nice.

The problem was that MANY cars had the potential to bring the British car industry back to where it should have been. Sadly, none of them did because of poor execution and a lack of attention to detail. By detail I don’t mean nice leather, wood and chrome. Those details make a car nice to look at. No, I mean the much more important engineering details that make a car reliable and build owner loyalty. Good quality electrical components, engine seals, proper rustproofing and well designed bodies with proper moisture drainage and sealing would have gone a long way towards making British cars viable products.

I had a 1972 P6 3500S for a number of years – one of the best cars I ever had – never had issues with judders on acceleration from anything. Also one of the easiest cars to work on under the bonnet as the engine bay was designed for Rovers turbine engine so everything was up the top inc. some of the steering linkages. Also one of the most comfortable and quiet.

That poor Saab. No rust is good, spring towers and shock mounts all solid. But all else … a sun-baked disaster. You could spend $100K getting this together and still be worse off than with an old running V4. Maybe a good start for a LeMons competitor, but even then, too expensive. $1500 BIN? Pass. What a shame.

I have a 3.5 litre v8 motor in my trike – engine is from a 1985 Rover SD1 Vitesse – high compression, high lift cam & 4 barrel Edelbrock carb. – mated to a Borg Warner 35 auto g’box

Those Valiants/Darts would rust out if you sneezed. But, the simple mechanics and die-hard slant 6 couldn’t be stopped. A friend had a Valiant in high school, and when he bought a replacement car, he decided to blow the Valiant up. So he drained all the oil out of the car, and drove it….for 3 days….and it wouldn’t die. He poured 5 quarts of oil back in the thing and sold it for $300.

Loved the Valiants commentary. My first car was a 63 Dodge Dart that I bought for $25 and drove for 3 years. I have pictures from the era. The 225 slant six is a Beast..

Love the Rover SD1. They are rare over here in England. I never knew they were exported to the US. We did not have such large safety bumpers on ours nor the round headlamps; flush aerodynamic ones on ours.
