What Might You Find? 1968 Pontiac GTO

1968 Pontiac GTO Barn Find

Oh the possibilities with this find! The photos don’t show us much and the seller doesn’t know a lot about it. It belonged to their husband, who sadly passed away before getting around to restoring it. It’s been parked in this barn for the past 30 or so years, so it has a think layer of dust and plenty of rust. She needs the space and wants it gone, so it is listed here on eBay in Akron, Ohio. With about a day left to go, bidding is only to $4,300, which seems like a good deal for a numbers matching GTO project, if it’s a real GTO that is.

The ad doesn’t give us much to go off of, but they do state that this is a numbers matching YS car. I’m not a GTO expert, but I believe that means this car has the 4 barrel 400 V8 with the Hydra-Matic transmission. That also means this car had 350 horsepower when new. It’s definitely an impressive amount of power, but compared not the most powerfully option in ’68.

I would really want to see this car in person before bidding much more than the current price. You just don’t know what exactly your going to find. We know for sure it needs to be restored, but we don’t know how badly it might be rusted or even why the hood doesn’t match. It could be the original, but was sanded for repairs, or it could be a Ram Air hood that someone added in hopes of gaining a few horses. You will have to go take a closer look to find out! Since I can’t make it Akron, I will just keep dreaming that there is a Ram Air setup hiding under that hood!

I think that was the most popular color for GTO’s in 68, wonder how many were built that color. love the car.

Pontiac Historical Society has all the data to show how many GTOs came in a color or with various options configurations. But they’ve apparently never aggregated their data to be able to do this. While PHS continues to provide a wonderful service to owners and prospective buyers by authenticating Pontiac cars, I wonder why they have not done this the way the Marti report does this for Fords.

Real GTO? It has the His and Hers shifter, does that mean anything?

The dual gate shifter only came on the turbo 400. It can be swapped into any gto, lemans from 1968-1972.
I don’t think there was any indication that the cold air hood added any power. Yes in theory cooler air is denser but how much effect did this have.

My friends wife’s brother has a 68 gto that is in a million pieces . I saw it once 15 years ago . He refuses to sell it and it’s been sitting in the garage since 1980 what a waste .

No worries. It’ll be in the estate sale his widow has.

Good thing they kept it in a nice clean place with the windows rolled up to protect the interior….you know, where people sit.

….Nope…..can’t look at those pics any longer……got to go wash up now…..

Could be a diamond in the rough or a big pile of poo — no underneath pics or motor pics leave it up to you. As Clint said, “Do you feel lucky?”. 20 Years of running around Ohio would leave me to vote “NO” and run away.

By the VIN it is a GTO I wonder what her reserve is?

PHS would tell us how it was originally equipped. Not worth the gamble in my opinion.

It’s odd that even a set of pictures showing underneath rust and a neglected engine compartment would bump the final selling price. I’ve never understood someone with a classic vehicle posting grade-school level pictures and then wondering why they didn’t get full price.

Not saying it shouldn’t be saved but at it’s current bid you could part it out and make money but as a GTO lover I hope it gets saved.

I think people are staging these like the realtors do to make more acttractive

My guess is that the different colored hood is the result of a replacement due to an engine fire and nothing to do with ram air.

Why didn’t you just store it at the bottom of a lake. At some point in 30 years didn’t it occur to you to roll up the windows, gee the car was getting kind of dusty?

Her phone number is in the ad listing. Maybe if someone is interested, a call to her would fill in the blanks.

Not original hood. Looks like a hole for hood tach but no tach in dash. I believe you could only get a dual gate shifter w a TH400 in a GTO in 68. You could not get one in a Lemans which only came w a 2 speed trans.

Correct Steve. The shifter and console bolt to the floor.
Some knuckle heads put these in 2ND gen firebirds. (Poor fit)
That’s why their called knuckle heads.

Like Houndswg said it has the VIN of a GTO. The first three numbers for GTO’s from 66-70 or is it 72 is 242 and for a Lemans is 237…. No clue for a Tempest. I owned a 66GTO, 67 GTO Cinvertible, 70 GTO Hard Top and a 67 Lemans before my two Trans Ams when I was in highschool. I use to buy them fix them up and the sell them. Sold my 67 Convertible in 1983 for 1500.00….All the cars had a 4spd except my Lemans had a automatic.
