1,194 Miles! 1987 Ford Mustang GT

This 1987 Ford Mustang GT is an incredible low-mileage time capsule, with well under 2,000 original miles and in showroom condition. Featuring Cabaret Red paint with a Sand interior and the preferred manual transmission, this GT is a holy grail car if you’re a Fox Body collector who simply wants a top-shelf GT spec example. The window sticker remains affixed to the glass and the seller says it’s been driven regularly since new. Find it here on craigslist in Pennsylvania for $35,900.

That may seem pricey, but with just 1,194 miles, this may very well be the newest 1987 Mustang GT in existence. The restraint needed to never drive a performance car is an impressive measure of one’s self-control, but I get the feeling cars like these share garage space with plenty of other choices. The odometer tells the tale, while the rest of the car’s condition validates just how minty this example remains. The seller notes it has never been driven in inclement weather, so keeping this GT under wraps was no accident.

Perhaps I’m jaded, but sometimes these seemingly perfect cars have some fatal flaw, usually in the form of an automatic transmission. Sometimes, the color scheme is just awful. Whatever it is, this Mustang doesn’t suffer from it, as it has the preferred manual transmission and an interior that I can’t recall seeing all that often: sand cloth buckets with matching carpets. I’m not saying that black cloth wouldn’t be better, but at least this upholstery choice is a decent match with the Cabaret Red paint. It’d be nice to see matching floor mats, however.

The engine bay is spotless, as you’d expect, with all factory stickers and warning labels still in place. The spotless paint continues to the inner fenders, and given the 5.0L is a fairly worry-free engine, I can only imagine one that’s seen barely any use is functionally perfect. Still, you’d expect to see some record of annual fluid changes, even with below-average miles. While I consider this a lot of money to spend on a car you can’t drive, I’m sure it seems like pocket change to the Fox Body collector that has everything.

I would have put more miles than this in the first week of ownership. Kind of an odd color but it’s a nice one. Cheaper than paying 10k for rusted out junk and trying to restore it.

A car I can’t drive? Who says? I agree with Arthell64, I would drive the crap out of this…

A little pricey, its a nice car but could probably find one for a lot less in a little poorer condition.

Bought a small motorcycle from the original owner, with only 550 miles on it. After some work to get it running, etc, I put 650 on it in one day.

Heh… Search for “Lake Erie Loop” for why I did that. A long time to sit on a NS50F and hold the throttle wide open.

      Much respect for that ride!

A super nice Fox Body. I like the somewhat unusual Cabarnet/Sand scheme. I don’t know what the seller will eventually get for it, but if it is anywhere close to the asking price, it’s another example of the rise in Fox Body prices in general, and the premium that ultra low mileage examples are bringing.

The color Cabarnet makes much more sense than Cabaret!

I personally think this is one of the best color combos for the fox body. As much as I would love to have this one, I would want one just like it with more mileage (how strange is that to say?) so that I wouldn’t worry about racking up the miles.

Dennis from Fast N Loud collects these and sold some of them for stupid money. I work at a Ford dealer. A new Mustang GT with useless computers throughout the car cost $52,000. Conv is more. Offer this guy $29,000 and drive it. Life is too short to have it sit. Guarantee the tires have flat spots and the brake lines are rusted. Hope he changed the coolant. The car is still 33 years old. The caveat. You drive it and a drug addict riding around in a 30 year old Honda with no insurance plows into it.

Sadly, too stupid to not happen.

I had a friend that bought a new ’87 GT. Charcoal grey with a light grey interior. Beautiful car and fast too.
Charcoal was the irony, because one night, a short while after he arrived home, his Mustang caught fire and burnt to a crisp. I think it was due to a recall Ford had at the time.

      Fuel line connections, big recall.

I always thought the Crayola dayglow red stripe was at odds with the medium cabernet color. Not my favorite combo.

Odd to see a GT from this era with manual windows.

Seems a little on the high side to me.The main thing i would be worried about is such low miles and so much sitting is not good in some respects,if you wanted to drive it on a semi regular basis. Flat spotted tires, seal and gaskets hardened up/ brittle, ect. If you start driving it, likely to spring leaks everywhere. But definitely a nice stang!

Firstly, you could not spec this car with Black cloth interior in 1987. Secondly, it would not look better. This is a perfect and seldom seen color combo.

Nice car, but I call BS on the mileage for 2 reasons. 1, the odometer numbers dont line up very well, and for it to have
only that many miles, the numbers should line up almost perfectly. 2, the dr seat looks way more sat in. And for anyone who has owned or knows these cars, are all too familiar with the Mustand dr seat “lean” its not just adjusted back more then the pass seat, but the bottom cushion looks way more worn for 1200 miles and the frame is already leaning back. They dont mention if it still is wearing the original tires or not, which would be important. There is no doubt its a low mileage well taken care of car, but prob more like 20k miles or around there at least.

Agree. And non-factory floor mats raise an eyebrow too.

Most Foxbody Mustangs have the same issue with the odometer numbers not lining up. This is not abnormal. And I’d bet that he’s got the original floor mats. Those look to just be random rubber ones so to not mess up the OEMs. From every aspect, this looks like an all original true mileage car. Right down to the proper 1987 alternator & battery cables, of which both usually get replaced throughout this many years passing.

New speedos don’t always line up, especially in FORDS.
What’s to say an XXXL sized driver wasn’t behind the wheel for those 1194 miles ?
Then the seat would definitely look like that !

I wouldn’t be so quick to jump to the conclusion that the odometer was tampered with, thereby calling the sellers honesty into question. I have owned numerous new cars (Fords included) with these mechanical odometers that don’t line up worth a damn. I cant speak to the perceived seat “lean” but I’d tend to believe the sellers claim of originality. This car looks the part to me.

$35,900??…….LMAO (Laughing My Ass Off)!!!!! Get real! The new 5.0 Coyote engine will run circles around this car! In fact, my 14 Mustang with the 3.7 V6 and 6 speed manual will runs circles around this car with 305 horsepower vs. 225 the 87 GT 5.0 had.

You are exactly correct. Just about any new car, even basic economy cars, will out-perform most 30+ year old performance cars. But maybe, just maybe, there are buyers who value other factors beyond raw performance, and are willing to pay for a prime specimen of their liking.

If it has been driven every year locally, was it just once every year as that is really low mileage.

Love the tan interior. So sick of grey and black all the new cars have. COLOR doggone it, we need some color!

I like 5.0 Mustangs, had several, and the best part was the drive. They don’t have the stylish good looks of the early Mustangs or do they perform like the draw dropping late models, I always hoped these five -oh’s would stay affordable for the average tuner/enthusiast.
