17,000 Miles From New: 1990 Ford Mustang Convertible

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The same seller of the minty Toyota Celica ST we just featured also has this 1990 Ford Mustang convertible, wearing similar colors and with equally impressive low mileage. What are the odds they came from the same home or estate, a his and her pairing of cheap but fun cruises? This Mustang may be a low-spec model, but with only 17,000 miles, its condition is excellent. Find it here on eBay with bidding just over $1K and the reserve unmet.

While we all like the V8-powered GT cars, there’s something pleasing about your basic Ford Mustang convertible. It’s American as apple pie and will draw smiles wherever you go. Put in a parade on the 4th of July or simply use at any cruise night of your choosing; it will be welcome at both. I have to imagine the husband drove the Mustang and his wife piloted the Celica; apparently, they shared similar tastes in colors if the cars came from the same estate.

The interior ins nothing short of perfect; the cloth seats and gray fuzz interior will put you to sleep but at least it’s inoffensive. The dashboard, steering wheel and door panels all present as new. Another automatic / four-cylinder combination isn’t the enthusiasts’ choice, but it does likely explain how the Mustang remained so well preserved. Without a V8 and a manual to tempt you, there’s no thrill in abusing a specimen like this.

The engine bay shows no signs of use. The plastics all present as new, and it’s always a bit jarring to see how much more open it is under the hood without the typical V8 jammed inside. The seller of this car and the Celica doesn’t make any mention of preventative maintenance or reconditioning performed, so it’s a worthwhile question to ask; at the same time, I’d love to know if this Mustang and the Celica shared garage spaces for the last 20 years.

Were I to the good, rather than the not-so-good, I’d jump on this. I have no need for screaming V8 power anymore and I’ve been eyeing convertibles anyway. Love the interior, the color, the tire and wheel combination. Without even looking at the ebay listing, palm trees tell me it’s far, far away. C’est La Vie

Girlfriend back in the mid nineties had a four banger Mustang with a manual transmission. That was an absolute slug, white knuckles in any passing or merging on to the freeway with even 60 mile an hour traffic. She hated my noisy ’86 GT, thought I was putting our lives in danger whenever I so much as nudged the throttle, I felt the same way about hers as it seemed dangerously underpowered in certain driving situations. You can always drive a strong running car slow and responsibly, but a dog will always be a dog…sometimes with fleas.

I could tell from the first photo in the write-up that this car was likely from the eastern portion of the Valley of the Sun (Phoenix, AZ area) where many of the residents are snowbirds or elderly. I’m guessing this car probably belonged to an elderly snowbird that rarely drove it.

Troy is right there is no enjoyment driving these cars
I worked for a ford dealership in 1990 and they were gutless brand new.

That would wholly depend on ones definition of enjoyment

I could see this as a nice, top down cruiser once the snow and ice melts away…if you want a tire burner, buy one with the money you’re ahead from buying the four-banger Mustang. Who says you can only have one toy?

If I could I really would! Nice clean little car! I never liked this particular body style but it would be a nice around town driver!

I have a ’92 four popper drop top. That 2.3L is unbreakable and a little zippy too. So fun for cruising around town. And the average trade-in value according to kbb is $686! Awesome….
