1940 Mercury Eight: Stunning Stalled Project

front

This Mercury project is a stalled frame off restoration and is listed here on eBay. They got a long way into the restoration, but can’t finish and are selling it off for just $8,500. If the work is done well this seems like a great deal! It just needs an interior, fuel tank and such. It’s perhaps 95% done and 40% to go, as they say. Most parts to complete the restoration are included, including the original wheels and tires. It is a four door, so it’s not worth a lot yet, but the work looks stunning, don’t you think? The work on the engine alone probably cost more than the asking. I hope someone purchases this, completes it and enjoys driving it.

Would look great with about 6 inches off the top and as a two door.

The speedo goes to 110 mph. With Ol’ Henry’s outdated Model T suspension, this would really be a handful anywhere close to that speed.

Plenty of roadsters and chopped coupes did nearly double that at dry lakes and Bonneville with the same suspension.

In a straight line ok, but not on a road with curves.

It looks like someone saw a chance to get into a vintage Merc with that great ’39-’40 style grille for not much cash and took it.

Yes it’s a 4-door and not a coupe or one of the rare convertibles, but so what? You would be spending most of your time in the front half of the car anyway, so just spend most of your looking at the front half of the car. After a while you’ll like the whole car, especially one in this condition and for this price.

I’ve owned several ’40 Fords and loved ’em all but never had a Merc. I think this was well-bought, even though it’s a 4 dr….

Kem, It looks terrific, and this proves that if you just keep going, the project will get done. It might take a while, or even a long while, but it will get done.

I know of a guy in London, Ontario who also has a ’39 (or maybe ’40) Mercury convertible. His name is John Hogg.

OK…..I see you know this already. I just Googled ‘John Hogg 1939 Mercury’ to confirm the name, and came up with this link that explains how John helped with the body on your car:

I met John through a car buddy I have in London. I understand that John’s ’39 Merc convertible was invited to a special show that Ford put on in Dearborn a couple of years ago I believe it was.

Anyway, it’s good to see your car done and looking so good. I have always liked these cars, especially the front ends. Congrats!

Come on, what is it everybody has against 4-doors? I think they are often beautiful. Look at this ’48 Lincoln, one of the most unloved 4-doors. Graceful, lovely. And when they’re all chopped up and gone for Continental restorations and hot rods, we’ll be sorry. At least I will. OK, there, I said it.
