Update 6/28/11 – The auction for this Crosley ended with the reserve unmet at $3,875. We’ll be watching to see if it gets relisted.

In the late 1930’s the American industrialist Powel Crosley dreamed of building a compact car for the American market. In 1940, the Crosley Corporation debut its first car at the Indianapolis Speedway, but received a somewhat cold reception. The company revised their design several times and introduced many firsts for the American automobile market. By 1952, Crosely was building a wide range of models. This convertible sedan has a 750 cc engine paired with a 3 speed transmission driving the rear wheels. It’s currently for sale on eBay with a current bid around $2,200.

Croselys were unique cars when they were new, especially in the American market where bigger was definitely better. This car would probably fit in better on the streets of Europe then the streets of Detroit. But we love that about these cars, as chances are you’re never going to pass another one on the interstate.

1952 Crosley Sedan Convertible Interior

While the interior of this car is simplistic, the bright red with white accents really jumps out at you. It was definitely a departure from the big American cars of the time. These cars were very simple with few features or options.

1952 Crosley Sedan Convertible Engine

The car’s original 750 cc CIBA engine is still intact and running condition. The seller recently had the carburetor rebuilt and says the engine is running well. We don’t know too much about these cars, so we aren’t too sure on parts availability.
