1958 Chevrolet Impala 348 And Delray Package Deal!

Reader Larry B has another great find for us! This time it’s a pair of 1958 Chevrolets, one an Impala and the other a Delray, both are two doors. The Impala is packing a 348 V8 and the Delray is equipped with a 235 Blue Flame six. Larry has decided to sell them as a pair, the Delray could provide lots of parts for the Impala (or you could restore both). What Makes It Special? The primary thing that makes them special is that both cars are original. The Impala has been repainted, but hasn’t been cut up or modified.

Body Condition: Both cars have super straight bodies, but they do have rust issues and need to be restored.

Mechanical Condition: The Impala has the matching number 348 with 3sp on the column and the 58 Delray 2dr Sedan has the matching number 6-cyl with 3sp on the column. Both cars are not in running condition

1958 Bel Air Impalas are quite desirable, especially ones with the 348 V8. While this one wasn’t optioned with a multi-carb setup, it’s still good for 250 horsepower. There’s definitely a lot of work to be done to make the Impala a driver, but the Delray should provide quite a few of the parts needed to restore it.     I think instead of 150, 210 and Belair it was Delray, Belair and Impala for ’58. Was the Delray replaced by the Biscayne in ’59?

      Impala was a Bel Air sub-series for 1958, so it was Delray, Biscayne, Bel Air, and Bel Air Impala.

      I remember seeing both in both years. No DelRay in ’57, nor Biscayne. 150’s and 210’s were in previous years…’55, ’56 and ’57.

    Back when my folks first got married (’65), my dad bought a ’58 with the 348 at the advice of his dad instead of a nice ’55. Dad kicks himself to this day on that decision.
    I see a cool hot rod here in the Impala for the local cruise night, keep it black and slightly “used”, period correct speed and engine dress up items, no dice hanging off the mirror, heavy sounding exhaust..etc…etc

      I would go along with all of that advice, except to say that the fuzzy dice would be nice. But that’s no big deal one way or the other. It’s when restorable originals get abominated and lose their originality, that’s when it becomes a raw deal.

    Both cars obviously have front fender rust issues with the lip above headlights (especially the DelRay…!) typical for this year. Cool cars but enormous amounts of work to be done.

    I’d never hesitate to agree any W-engine looks great in an x-frame Chevy, however I wouldn’t necessarily be desperate about locating one with a 348. I mean, the W didn’t get serious until the 409 was introduced mid-year ’61. IMO a large cube SBC can be built to be a superior power plant for less $ and less weight.

    As for the DelRay;is it supposed to be the Impala’s parts car…? I love stripper cars; so if it’s salvageable I would rather see it back on the road retaining its I-6 in a seriously hopped up version!

      A fellow I was in the USAF with had a ’58 Impala with a 348 in it. Swapped it out for a 327. Better built engine, lighter weight and ran a whole lot better…faster.

    Got a lot of options here, I’d fix the impala , install 4 speed and drive as you work on the body. Don’t underestimate the 348; I’ve built a few and they run very well. Installed one in a 53 chev sedan delivery, with an s-10 5 speed and mustang 2 “modular” front end with power steering rack.it’s a monster! These 348s dominated the local drag strips; One of Joe Amato’s first rides was a willys coupe with a stock 348, before the 409 and BBC came along. He was unbeatable!

    In 1971 I purchased a 58 Impala 348 three speed manual with od for $150 bucks. The guy I bought it from had already had it painted candy apple red metal flaked with matching interior. He was awol from the army and was on his way to Canada. It was a really nice car, wish I still had it, but ofcourse two divorces and other life obstacles made that not possible.

    Bought a nice 58 Impala at a wrecking yard in San Diego for $500 while in the Navy in the 70s. 283 4 barrel 3 speed with overdrive. Put in new clutch and dual exhaust system at the NTC base hobby shop. Had seats done in TJ in white diamond tuck naugahide.Drove it across country to next duty station in Charleston SC sometimes getting over 22 MPG. Sweet ride! Wish I kept it. God is good.

      Let me see if I got this straight. So did somebody junk a (presumably rust free California) “nice ‘58 Impala“ with 283/4 barrel/3 speed/overdrive that only needed a clutch, exhaust, and seats, back in the 70s? (without the “40 years in the weeds effect”)
      Kudos to you for rescuing it!

        Clutch and exhaust were shot along w/brakes, tires and a broken pass door window.
        I fixed as much as I could while parking it off base because they wouldn’t allow it on the base. Finally it was good enough for me to bring on base and use the hobby shop to do brakes clutch exhaust etc.
        Good times, kept me out of trouble.

    Growing up during the timeframe of these was interesting then, and more so now. A buddy’s family was decidedly “Bowtie”. His Dad had a ’58 with, I believe, a 283 auto (four door), while my friend later got a black Impala hardtop with a “warmed” 348 and 4 speed. He sold it just prior to going in the Air Force. Always had fun with him and his Dad. Wonder what either one would think of these two cars….
