1959 Bugeye Sprite In Pieces

S

Listed here on eBay in Reynoldsburg, Ohio with a BIN of $3,000 is this 1959 Bugeye titled project. Here’s another good looking beginning of a two-seater project. This project was picked up a few years ago and has stalled. Please review the images below and see if this is one you would like to get moving along. Oh and does anyone else find it ironic that this Austin Healey Sprite has a Chevrolet Technician’s fender cover laying on it’s trunk?

This ’59 does need floor pans, as many do that have sat outside, there are no images of the floors provided. There are parts included to convert the front wheels to discs, so that’s a nice bonus.

This package comes with a 1098cc engine and the gearbox. There are 2 rear axle assemblies and you will get one, but if you purchase at the BIN you will get all the parts the owner has: the 2 driveshafts, 3 sets of doors, 3 top (hood) frames, 2 radiators, 12 wheels, 2 steering wheels, 2 dashes, 2 windshields, and all the new/old lights.

The tonneau cover and top (hood) are included. You can contact the owner by phone if you have any questions. How could you go wrong at a BIN of $3,000?

Cheers,
Robert

My auction estimate is at least $5500. I wouldn’t be surprised if it doubles the seller’s original buy-it-now.

I have mixed reactions to this Sprite. There are lots of parts, and if the 1098 engine turns and is serviceable that’s a plus. But the seller says it needs floors. Given that, it’s a problem that there’s only one photo that shows only a small part of the lower chassis, which is gone. I get suspicious when there are lots of good photos but none of the lower chassis. I’m guessing that the project probably stalled because giving this car solid floors is a big job for an amateur restorer. The rear quarter eliptical spring mounts would be a tough thing to build.

Sprite projects aren’t so expensive that there aren’t better cars out there to tackle. If this auction ends with a bid near the current $1500 it might be a good buy for someone who needs Sprite parts, but I would not tackle this car when there are other affordable Sprites out there.

There is nothing but a little perforated angle steel holding the front of the car to the back. The whole lower structure of the car has been cut out. No wonder this project “stalled”. Needs inner/outer sills, spring perches, trans tunnel etc. Good for parts.
