1961 Dodge Town Wagon: Pre-Durango

PowerWagon

It’s strange to think that something resembling the Power Wagon could have as gentle of a name as “Town Wagon”, but that’s exactly what has popped up on eBay – a 1961 Dodge Town Wagon with active bidding and the reserve unmet. I suspect the seller has mislabeled his particular vehicle, as its a 2WD model and only the 4WD models received the Power Wagon moniker. Regardless, this is a clean example that pre-dates the modern-day Durango by more than a few years and is arguably more attractive to boot! There’s not much given in the way of information, but it is said to have a rebuilt motor accompanied by a stick shift, which makes this an intriguing project for the hobbyist who needs to haul and wants to row his own gears. The body looks fairly straight, and while I love the jacked-up appearance of the Power Wagon, this Town Wagon presents a nice alternative to the International Harvester Scout. Would you use this vintage rig for cruising, hauling – or both?

Looks like a good truck to use in a “head-butting” contest! I’d drive it.

Scout alternative? Maby a travel all alternative……….these are twice the size of the contemporary Scouts. Sometimes you guys age is apparent………….these competed with Suburbans and Ford pickup based chassis people haulers.

Dave, I guess I see this more as a weekend vehicle for camping, not a work vehicle as it may have originally been designed to be. And I’d much rather take this to the campsite than a Scout! Just personal preference.

A scout will make it to a campsite this one couldn’t fit down the road to…………..

Dave Wright is right! And the panel van versions were often seen delivering groceries and dry cleaning or operating as painters’ and carpenters’ vans. Those were the days before the Dodge van, Ford Econoline and Chevy van. Takes me back …

The window/seat version like this truck was called the Town Wagon, and the non window panel version was called the Town Panel. Neither had anything to do with the 4wd Power Wagon, a separate model. The military probably bought more of these and kept it alive until it was replaced by the A100 and A108 vans in 1964.

The four speed tranny has me surprised. Half ton trucks usually have a three speed. There is some rust to repair, and a few small things, but the body looks good to me. Buy and drive.
