1966 Pontiac GTO: Not Lookin’ So Fine

1966 Pontiac GTO

As a child I remember being fascinated with the twin vertical lights on mid-60’s Poncho’s. This GTO, shown to be real with documentation, is for sale in Newfane, New York and is offered here on eBay with bidding currently at $4000 with reserve not met. Originally a 389 Tri-Power 4-speed car, the original drive train is long-gone. Its currently powered by a ’68 400 and automatic transmission from a Bonneville, but is said to run well. The seller is hoping to find the bumpers and states little else is missing. No body rust-through is noted, but work will at least have to be done to the driveshaft and brakes before the GTO is drivable. Despite wearing Oldsmobile rims in the pictures, the ad states the original-type Pontiac rims are available with the car. The car was found in a garage where it had been stored since the mid-80’s; it’s a shame it’s not in a garage now. Depending on the reserve price, this could be a sleeper bargain. Are Ronnie and the Daytona’s calling you?

Is the ten (10) bolt rear end correct for the GTO?

Looks like the rodents threw a massive party in the interior and someone did several patch welds in the floorpans.

Once again, I’m rather annoyed that the original powertrain isn’t in it. That cuts the value in half. Of course, if they manage to find a period correct engine, that will help.

Chitown: The 10 bolt diff is the correct diff for the 66 GTO.

Bumpers are the least of the concerns for this car. The repro ones are very nice and are cheaper than replating. The original driveline options make this a desirable GTO, but because it is missing, the value is no longer there.

Nice if it was saved, but financially, a person will be much farther ahead buying one already done.

There are no pictures of the VIN plates, trunk, or floor plans.

I am also puzzled why one picture shows the driver’s door jam is painted a bronze color while the rest of the car is blue.

I’ve seen this car posted before at a non auction site and remember being surprised by the high price.

This body has been sanded/primed, but I see a gold color in one door jamb, and blue in the other? Maybe I’m confused. And.. Yep the critters partied good in there.
