The Mercury Cougar fans out there are probably thinking, “the Cougar wasn’t offered as a convertible until 1969.” And your right, there wasn’t a convertible Cougar until ’69. As it turns out this ’68 Cougar started life as a hardtop, but after some hard work by a professional, this car is now a convertible. When the Cougar rolled off the assembly line in 1967 it was a huge hit. Right away people began asking for a convertible version, but it wasn’t until ’69 that Mercury finally built a convertible. Normally turning a hardtop into a convertible is a terrible idea, but since the Cougar is based on the Mustang all the necessary parts are available for the car. The owner had the conversion done and while it’s not the cleanest job, it doesn’t look bad and seems to be structually sound.
This car’s interior is fantastic and having the original Dan Gurney interior makes it that much more amazing. All the materials look to be in great condition and the dash cap looks crack free. Given that this car is a convertible we would inspect the floors for rust, but at a glance everything looks solid.
This Cougar is powered by a 302 V8 and while it’s not the biggest of the V8s that were available in the Cougar, it’s still a great V8. It only produces about 230 hp, but given that this car wasn’t originally built as a convertible it’s probably best that it’s not one of the bigger V8s The engine looks to be in great condition, but we don’t know if it’s matching numbers or not.
We love the styling of the early Cougars and this car looks great. This car is going to need a few small things done to it, but it only has 50,000 miles on it. If the conversion was done right we would imagine someone can get years of enjoyment out of the car. We would be sure to inspect this car very closely, especially in the areas where the reinforcement was added. We would like to thank Gord for sharing this find with us.
looks really nice i loved these cars were just as good as a mustang
yea always loved the sleek style of the ol’ cougar + its unique rear sequential turn signals. Oh yea and those hidden headlights too & over time you’d see some of them in various stages of part way up or down. overall seemed like a great car, still does. not many of them around these days, they seem to be kinda rare.
