1968 Mustang Convertible: Plain But Fun?

1968 Mustang Convertible

This one owner 1968 Mustang convertible has been sitting for a few years and now the owner is ready to part with it. It’s a rust free California car with the usual cosmetic flaws for its age. It’s a 289 with a 3-speed manual on the floor. This Mustang was born blue but painted white years ago and the interior was redone some time ago also. It’s a nice “25 foot car”.  After an emblem was stolen, the owner removed the rest but they are included with the car. This is a pretty plain Mustang, but it’s all original except for the paint. Wouldn’t this make a great daily driver? I guess a lot of folks would upgrade and customize it. Perhaps one day it will appreciate into stupid money, so one could tell the wife it’s an investment. What would you do with it? It is being offered by the California Automobile Museum and can be found here on their website. What do you think is a realistic price?

It may be a little rough around the edges, but it looks like loads of fun to me David!

    68 should be a 302 not a 289

My grandmother bought a brand new ’68 a few years after my grandfather passed. It had a 289.

The 302 was a 230HP F or J engine code option as was the 289 180HP with a 2 barrel, engine code C, according to fordclassic.com, Hagerty and other sites.

      This convertable is a C code 289.

        Yes, you’re right. I have a 68 C code and it’s a 289.

It looks like a great car, but it does have enough mechanical issues that i think they are a bit optimistic on their price. They might have it confused with a Porsche

nice plain driver. 17,500 not likely. 10k tops. A person can get a lot of nicer car for the 17,500 they are asking.

I think $17,500 is way too high. I’d go as high as $8k. It needs a lot of money invested to make it decent, and there is some gooey looking bondo over the left headlight.

I agree with others as a bit too pricey in the current condition, I am thinking $10k tops, it appears that this little pony spent a lot of time in the sun with the top down looking at the dash and steering wheel, would need a good PI determine actual $ value.

I’m always suspicious of a color change to white. It’s the perfect color to hide previous rust and body damage. Why go white? Why not resell red? PMI is highly recommended!

Agree with Don E. On the white but still think it would be fun.

do the PI then make an offer. looks like it might be a nice driver but not at the asking price.

I like it, but not at that price point. Not being a Mustang expert I’d rather pay money to a Mustang expert to go over this one with a fine tooth comb(and magnet) and list all the warts. This is the base V8 Mustang and not really anything special. The absence of the 4 speed trans should knock down the price. Besides, who would want a white “60s Barn Finds Mustang without the bullet hole?
