1969 AMC SC/Rambler: Hurst Special

1969 AMC SC-Rambler

What happened when AMC and Hurst joined up to build a limited production muscle car? The birth of one of the most potent muscle cars of the era is all! If you haven’t ever heard of the SC/Rambler, then you’ve been missing out on one of the all time greats. AMC took their compact Rambler, stuffed a 390 V8 in it, and strapped a Hurst shifter to the 4 speed transmission! The low weight of the Rambler and V8 power made it a force to be reckoned with! This SC/Rambler was discovered in a barn, but is now up for grabs here on craigslist in St. Cloud, Minnesota for $13k. Special thanks to Alan F for this tip!

1969 AMC SC-Rambler Engine

Prior to the Hurst SC/Rambler, the compact Rambler was known for one thing, fuel economy. It actually held the title of being one of America’s cheapest and most efficient cars, but when they stuffed the 315 horsepower AMX V8 under the hood, fuel efficiency was of little concern. With all that power, the SC/Rambler was an instant hit with drag racers and proved to be a potent machine. And not only was the car fast, it was flashy. This bright red, white, and blue paint job definitely catches your attention! With just 1,500 or so built, this car deserves to be back on the road. The question though is whether it should be fully restored or left in its original appearance?

Restore it. See all the rust on the lower edges of the front door area.

If this is an original SC, which it appears to be, it is definitely worth restoring. People are even making clones out of regular Rambler Americans. This would be the “A” paint scheme, as the “B” paint didn’t have the wide red stripe down the side. When at the AMC reunion in Kenosha last summer, there were quite a few of these, as well as the similarly painted Rebel “Machine”.Interesting side note, this was the last car to have the Rambler name, as in 1970, it was just AMC.

Love the old dragstrip stickers! If the engine turns over (or even runs!) it seems like a decent price to me as long as there’s not much terminal rot underneath. Either way, it definitely needs a full restoration. The appeal of these cars is the ‘in your face’ outrageous color scheme. This is so faded out it doesn’t have any of that punch at all…

Yes restore this one. The damage doesn’t look terminal, there are a pile of parts included, and the rarity of it is deserving of a restoration

Too much cash for what you get. It is a shame it got this way.

I’ve been a part of restoring two of these (not mine).
They are fast and fun to drive. their value is high right now . If done right they sell for over 50k.
