1970 Chevrolet Camaro RS Project

The 1970 model year marked a major turning point for Chevrolet’s popular pony car. With an all-new body design and a more aggressive stance, the second-generation Camaro debuted and quickly established itself as one of the most recognizable muscle cars of the era. This 1970 Chevrolet Camaro RS, currently listed on eBay, represents the first year of that redesign and is being offered as a restoration project.

According to the listing, this Camaro is a numbers-matching RS model equipped with a V8 engine and an automatic transmission. The engine is identified as a 307 cubic-inch V8, a common small-block option during the early years of the second-generation Camaro lineup. The car is also described as having a deluxe interior, which was an upgraded trim level available to buyers who wanted additional comfort and styling touches inside the cabin. Combined with the RS package, that configuration helped give these Camaros a distinctive look and feel when they were new.

The seller explains that the car was intended to be restored but the project could not be completed after they lost their job. As a result, the Camaro is now being offered to someone else who may want to finish bringing it back. New sheet metal is included with the project to assist with the restoration work. Replacement panels are a common part of classic car builds, especially for vehicles from this era, and having those pieces already on hand can help move a project forward more easily.

The listing notes that the car has approximately 99,000 miles showing. The vehicle carries a rebuilt or reconstructed title, and the seller also states that a bill of sale is included with the transaction. The 1970 Camaro is especially significant to enthusiasts because it introduced the second-generation design that would continue through 1981. With its longer hood, wider stance, and refined styling, the new body marked a clear evolution from the original first-generation cars that launched the Camaro name in 1967.

Projects like this often appeal to enthusiasts who enjoy the process of bringing a classic car back to life. With its numbers-matching drivetrain and first-year second-generation status, this Camaro RS offers a starting point for someone ready to continue the restoration journey.

Would you take on restoring this first-year second-generation Camaro RS and return it to the road?

I am sure the originality cult will have a fit, but I foresee an engine swap in this car’s future. With a rebuilt title and 307, there is NO financially viable or general enjoyment reason to restore this to original specs. The only reason to restore it to original is for originality itself, which is not enough reason in my eyes. I am not a huge Camaro guy, but I suspect the RS split bumper on this one is the primary feature that will make it an ideal resto-mod candidate.

It seems to me that selling a car without a link to bid on it is a tough proposition!

A 307 is no slouch as far as being a runner with a little upgrading. Although a crate motor might be an attractive option as they could be pretty gutless in 2b and single exhaust form. And if you’re gonna get back in decent shape you’re probably gonna want some hp go to go with it. So back to original? Unlikely but split bumper fronts are pretty hot!
