1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo: Clean Cruiser

left front

It’s not often you see a survivor this nice for a reasonable price. This survivor grade Monte Carlo, well minus the custom wheels at least, is listed here on craigslist for $8,900. That’s about right for a condition 4 car and this one may be a bit better than a 4. It’s got 143,000 miles but looks great in and out, with the plastic covers are still on the seats. It’s a 350 car with a 2 barrel carb and is rated at 250HP. The seller has done the needed mechanical work including exhaust, brakes, fuel, fluids, belts and tires on new wheels. This might be worth a look if you’re anywhere near Moultrie, Georgia. This look like it might be a well sorted Monte Carlo, ready to drive and enjoy as is. So would you leave the custom rims or find the correct wheels and tires?

Steering wheel is not correct. It’s from an 80’s Monte Carlo.

Lots of room for a bigger engine in there! I have always liked these cars, I sold a good ’71 for $400.00 back in the day, the last check to pay it off bounced. G. Preston Sams, you out there somewhere?

Always amazed at the giant fan shroud. Basically, they were Chevelles with a extended front end. I think it would look better with the stock Rally wheels. Sell the rims and tires and get some of your money back.
Now for a couple concerns. The ad is a month old. This car should have sold quick. The steering wheel mentioned above isnt a huge deal but noteworthy. We all know 143k on a 70’s small block is a very worn out motor. So where is the mention of a rebuild? I’m suspicious

The paint looks good enough to be a repaint; maybe buyers are finding lots of bondo or tons of rust underneath? In my experience, if an item hasn’t sold on CL after 2 weeks, its time to lower the price and/or come clean about hidden problems

I owned 4 Montes (70, 71, 72 and 76) back in the 1970s. Nice ride, good power and a unique look but not many other teenagers shared my appreciation of them.

I love these. Not sure about the steering wheel though. I know 80’s gm wheels wont fit on the older columns and vice versa without modification. That is speaking from experience with my LeMonster. As for the wheels, i say keep them along with a set of rally wheels, 8″ vett rallys to be exact and switch them out once in a while for a change of pace. Im a firm believer that wheels can change the whole look and personality of any car. As long as they look good. But then again beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
