1970 Datsun 240Z Survivor!

This gorgeous 1970 Datsun 240Z is an unrestored example, wearing mostly original paint and other details that suggest it has led a charmed life. The seller notes the nose panel sports many original details that have been lost over time on many Series 1 cars, typically due to a bumper bash or other accident. While some modifications have been made, they seem to be of the sensible variety, and the 240Z overall sports a vibe of nicely preserved sports car versus over-restored garage queen. Bidders like it, too, as bids are closing in on $22,000 here on eBay with no reserve.

The early Series 1 240Zs are the most desirable models, and they’ve been on a tear across the vintage car marketplace for some time. The seller notes all the most important details are still correct with this one, from the correct rear hatch with the air vents beneath the back glass to the original Kyoto Euro taillights. Other important features include the original front fiberglass headlight buckets and correct early hood, along with a numbers matching L24 block with its original E31 head. Even the header and exhaust remain OEM correct.

The simple truth is that many of these Z cars were modified for competitive driving events or simply tweaked by young kids who bought the car second- or third-hand. Modifications are quite common, but neglect even more so, with the sensitive Japanese sheet metal being left out in the elements, often rusting away. This car still does have some signs of use, such as the interior, which could stand to get a refresh if you’re looking for a picture-perfect interior. The dash is cracked, like all of them seemingly are, but at least the cockpit remains as undisturbed as the outside.

Now, the seller has still made some tweaks to this highly original car, but they make good sense. The suspension has been converted to coil overs, which will certainly stiffen up the original setup but it’s also easily removed if you wish to return to a conventional spring/shock arrangement. The wheels are obviously larger and aftermarket, another cosmetic tweak that can be easily remedied if the 15X8 Watanabes aren’t to your liking. Finally, the seller swapped in a 3:90 limited-slip differential from an R180 Subaru STI, a common upgrade. Overall, this looks like a survivor with a few reasonable tweaks that can easily be reserved.

    Nice car, great color and choice of wheels. The modifications it has undergone were well thought out and can be easily reversed, if desired. It won’t be cheap, nor should it be. Whoever buys this car will have made a wise purchase.

    It’s in incredible non rusty shape. With a 22k reserve, I hope the owners pulls a lot more than that.

    The whole thing depends on the frame under the battery. Known to rust and rot due to the drain from the battery. I owned a 1970 model with this issue. Hard to correct.

      All the batteries back then were very corrosive & heavy & not that powerful either. By the 80’s most battery trays were toast on ’60’s cars.
      The new 525-600 cca compact sealed batteries for $55 for old cars from you know where have totally eliminated even battery terminal corrosion!!

    You’d think for that money, you would clean up the interior. I would be embarrassed to sell a car looking like that.
