1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Survivor

This is one of those cars that you would expect to see at one of the big auction houses. There would be yelling, excitement, and the bidding would get out of control. Instead the owner has decided to quietly list it for sale online. The Boss 429 was built to run with the big boys at NASCAR so it is powerful and very rare. Take a look at the auction here where bidding is already over $100k.

Most of us are more familiar with the Boss 302 which was built for Trans Am, but like we said, the 429 was built to race in NASCAR. Output was rated at 375 horsepower, but many claim that it was closer to 500! Ford wanted to compete with the 426 Hemi, so they had to build at least 500 of these cars to qualify.

They built 857 in ’69 and 499 in ’70, so finding one that has not been completely restored can be a challenge. Besides some touch-up, this Boss is claimed to be all original and like new. We would want some hard proof that this one has not been refurbished at some point, but we are hopeful. What do you think?

The seller of this car is a major Mustang collector. He also has a Hertz GT350 and a GT500 currently listed. He mentions that he is going to be selling off a bunch of Shelbys and Mustangs from his collection so you will want to keep an eye on his account.

~ white interior, as impractical as it is, looks nice to me.

IMO, the Boss 429 was the best looking 70 fastback. It was clean without extra stipes and clading.

I had a 70 fastback i ordered equipped the way I wanted with a 351C 4-barrel, comp suspension, traction lock, deluxe interior with, fold down rear seat, air, stereo tape and automatic. I think broke the auto trany at least twice! Kept it 6 years and traded it for my first BMW in 76. Still wish I had it and the 76 BMW 2002.

This would be a hard call to make. I’d say that if it was a restoration, it would have been some time ago. It looks fairly original to me. I might add that they could drop it off at my house and I’d take good care of it…

Back in the 70’s I had a list of cars I dreamed of owning the BOSS 429. was at the top. I settled for a 428 CYCLONE COBRA JET, loved the 428 CJ. but it wasn’t BOSS. I am a Ford man as we speak I’m waist deep in putting my 1974 PANTERA back on the road. Still the BOSS 429 is one cool machine. only God knows what would have happen if it ran the NASCAR circuit. Thanks Jim (one Ford nut)

I always wanted to at least ride in one of these, but never was around one in all of my days. I worked at a wrecking yard in tacoma wash. in the 70’s, they had a Boss 429 short block for sale the whole 3 years I worked there and no one even ask fo a price on it. I’ll never forget it cause it had big reliefs cut in the tops of the cylinders to clear the huge intake valves these things had. This looks to be what they say it is. As many stangs this guy has I’m sure it is what he says it is. jmo.

Great looking, no stripes the way I like them, no silly extra spoilers or Lambo vents, just the pure great design.

Back in the 1970s the family down the street worked at Lo Ford in Bridgeport, CT. The oldest son, a mechanic, had a car almost identical to the one shown in this ad. He totaled it after trying to outrun the police. His plan was to run away after he crashed and claim the car was stolen. A police dog found him hidding up a tree not far from the crash site. I have not seen him in 30 years but these cars always remind me of him.

WHEN I WAS A YOUNGSTER ONE OF MY NEIGHBORS HAD A WHITE ONE THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL AND HE KEPT IT SO CLEAN AND SHINEY. ONE HALLOWEEN SOMEBODY THREW EGGS AT IT AND HE THOUGHT IT WAS ME. AFTER ANOTHER NEIGHBOR WHO HAD A ’62 VETTE CONVINCED HIM IT WASN’T ME CAUSE I TOOK CARE OF THE VETTE JUST TO BE ABLE TO TAKE IT FOR A DRIVE UP AND DOWN BROADWAY. THINGS SEEMED OK TILL HE CAME TO FIRESTONE A COUPLE YEARS LATER TO HAVE SOME FRONT END WORK DONE ON IT. HE TOLD THE STORE MNGR. THAT HE DIDN’T WANT THAT PUNK KID WORKING ON HIS CAR. THE BOSS TOLD HIM I WAS THE BEST WE HAD(I WAS YOUNG,LOVED MY JOB AND WAS VERY FAST) HE WATCHED ME EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.WHEN IT CAME TIME TO TEST DRIVE IT AFTER THE ALIGNMENT. I WAS VERY EAGER TO GET IT OUT ON THE HIWAY.AS SOON AS I GOT ON THE ENTRANCE RAMP I STOPPED AND AND DID A BURNOUT THRU ALL 4 GEARS.AND DID NOT GET OFF THE GAS TILL I HIT THE NEXT EXIT.AND GOT OFF AND DROVE IT BACK TO THE SHOP. I THREW HIM THE KEYS AND SAID IT WAS GOOD TO GO AND THANKED HIM FOR THE RIDE.IF HE ONLY KNEW WHAT I DID.TO HIS CAR….. ONE OF MY BESTTER TEST DRIVES..

It’s amazing, the prices that these cars can command, when you consider the simple architecture of this car (based, after all, on the then-ten-year-old Falcon platform). I’m a Ford man and love all Mustangs, but I just find this phenomenal.
I have a friend who owns two–a ’70 Boss 302 and a ’69 Mach 1, both in top shape– and I thought he was nuts when he told me what he could get for them. Doubt no more!

After owning ford products all throughout my childhood, I really am partial to mopar. After buying my first chrysler product “a used 71 ‘cuda” back in the seventies, it ran forever, however even though I’m not partial to them, they are still a great company and I would be very happy to own one of those

My dad’s brother tried to buy a new 70 boss 429,after a heart stopping test drive down a one way street, my dad an the salesman both wanted out of the car. My dad didn’t scare too easy. But he couldn’t get insurance on the boss, but they did write him one for the 428 SCJ/4speed 70 Mach 1. A much faster car by the way. And a side note, they tried a 3×2 induction off a 406 my pop’s had, Bill said he couldnt hit the trottle in the first 3 gears and would haze em in high gear.

Back in 1978 my friend Andrew Kappas turned 16 and his dad bought him a real nice 1970 Mach 1 with a 428 Cobra jet in it. We were out hot rodding that thing that car the day he got it. We knew nothing about fixing cars and one day while trying to put a set of ladder bars on the car we completely dropped one side of the rear end off the car. We put it back up but the car did the crab when we drove it. We still were out racing it though until the lifters were making so much noise he just parked it in front of his house. A couple months later some guy knocked on the door and asked if it was for sale. Andrew said yeah he’d sell it. The guy asked how much and Andrew said give me 150.00 and it’s yours. The 150.00 went towards a bag of weed and some beer and we never saw the car again.
