1970 Oldsmobile 442 With 650 Horsepower!

This black and gold 1970 442 is for sale here on eBay for an asking price of $44,900. It is located in Wakefield, Massachusetts.  It is not a W-30 car but it does have the W-30 badges behind the front wheels. A real 442 is nice enough but the original 455 Olds motor was replaced with the Joe Mondello built 470 cubic inch 650 horsepower motor in 2002. Out of the approximately 20,000 442s built in 1970, 14,709 were hardtop Holiday coupes (no post).

The specific performance upgrades to the Mondello engine are not discussed but power is transferred through a Turbo 400 automatic transmission to the stout 4:11 rear gears. For more information on Joe Mondello, click here to learn more about his life and impact on Oldsmobile cars. If you like torque, this might be your car! The original engine comes with the purchase of the car. The engine compartment is very clean and shows that the seller has meticulously cared for this car.

The interior appears to be in nice shape and includes a Hurst dual gate shifter and aftermarket racing tach mounted to the dash. The brakes have been upgraded to include electric boost assisted vacuum, which you are going to need to slow this thing down. New bushings and steering components have also been installed to make sure you can keep this rocket straight.

The bottom of the car looks as clean as the top. Originally painted Sherwood green, I think the black repaint looks pretty shiny for its age. Several videos are included in the eBay listing that provides a more detailed look. While this car may upset an Olds purist, it appears to be quite a well-built package to go fast and look great. Maybe 442 can stand for $44,200 and you can take this car home!

I like the black and gold. Was this color combo available from the factory in 70? I would prefer a stock engine but it is a nice car.

They would have to pry my fat a$$ out from behind that collapsed steering column, but there would be such a grin on my dead face lol! Yup, I like it.

Nice, even without the engine mods, I think this was the most bad axx Oldsmobile made.

Doc Olds would be proud! Many years ago I enjoyed owning 3- 442’s . They were always my favorite. Stock was fast, this must be something! I wish I could afford it so I could harass my neighbors! Thanks for the memories.

What a beautiful car, what style, I never really appreciated these cars when I was younger but now in my old age the 68 to 72, 442 might just be my favorite midsize muscle car. I would love to own this one , black with gold , doesn’t get any better.

I can’t believe that an Oldsmobile fan would ever be upset with a Joe Mondello motor.

Way more fun with 650 ponies than the stock motor but having those parts and the ability to make it all original again is worth it in my opinion!!!

The kind of car where potential disaster is always under your right foot, things can happen in a real hurry with 650 horsepower hooked to 4:11 gears. What a car!

What was it Carroll Shelby said—More than 450 horses in a rear wheel drive is a waste of time.

I know little about these but 45 grand seems way to much

Love Oldsmobiles, have owned many including 442s. These were very good cars right from the factory with an appealing blend of style, comfort, reliability and performance. I have done business with Joe Mondello. Mondelo knew his business for sure. I would love to get behind the wheel of this car and put it through its paces.
On the other hand I don’t care for the color change. The original Sherwood green is a handsome color especially with the black interior. The Cutlass and 442 styling from this generation is sleek and muscular and well executed in detail. In my opinion black buries the styling and the stripes are overcompensation. The styling needs no such overstatement. The wing is tacky and serves no function. Are you trying to convince people that your car is so fast that you need an airfoil to stabilize it and keep it from becoming airborne? Please, this car will never see a racetrack. Oldsmobiles are heavy. All of that comfort and cush add weight. I would like to see a timeslip from a 1/4 mile run.
Also lose the dice and the shift light.
